A large solar outburst on Thursday led to a spectacular light show over Western Washington Saturday night.
The clouds parted and the aurora borealis was visible from some parts of Western Washington. We received photos from people on the San Juan Islands, at Deception Pass and in Deming.
Photographer Chris Teren took some great photos as he was looking toward Friday Harbor at between 11 p.m. and 1:30 a.m.? His series of +/- 70 still photographs ? each one a 5 second exposure - were then put together as a time-lapse video.
Teren explained how he got the shots.
"The camera is a Nikon D700 (12 megapixel & full-frame sensor) with a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 lens. I set the camera on a tripod and put it to full manual mode ? manual focus set to infinity, manual aperture set to f2.8 and a shutter speed of 5 seconds. I used an intervalometer to continuously shoot the 5 second exposures for approximately 5 minutes ? 70 photographs. The images were shot in RAW mode, then exported as JPEGs, and finally strung together using QuickTime on my iMac. The shots were taken from the Redoubt Road in the American Camp Nation Park on San Juan Island, looking more or less northward up San Juan Channel, across Griffin Bay towards Friday Harbor, which is visible in the bottom of the frame. The red lights in the lowerleft are the antenna on top of Mount Constitution on Orcas Island."
