Anthropology News: Announcing Open?and then closed again ...

I was just checking through my ridiculously full gmail inbox when I saw the latest ?content alert? from Anthropology News.? One piece really struck my attention: the announcement of a new open access publication called Open Anthropology.? AAA president Leith Mullings writes:

I am very pleased to announce that at its May meeting, the Executive Board (EB) agreed to explore and implement a pilot open access publication. Open Anthropology, the first public, open access digital-only publication of the American Anthropological Association, is expected to launch in 2013.

Wow, that?s some great news.? Here?s more:

In making this decision, the EB considered the extensive transformations taking place in scholarly publishing, as well as the importance of sharing information as widely as possible. In keeping with the AAA Statement of Purpose, Open Anthropology will help promote anthropology and anthropologists and ?the dissemination of anthropological knowledge and its use to solve human problems.? We know anthropology has much to offer in this regard

Yes indeed, anthropology does have a lot to offer.? Nice!? This is sounding fantastic.? Almost too good to be true.? More:

By examining the conditions under which various practices and relationships arise, anthropologists have a great deal to say about how and why they change. It is this perspective that makes the discipline potentially applicable to addressing the pressing problems of today?s world.

Yes!? This is really getting good.? Tell me more:

Open Anthropology will be devoted to previously published AAA articles, review articles, book and audiovisual reviews, and reports and comments on topics of interest to the general public, and that may have direct or indirect public policy implications. Content in Open Anthropology will be culled from the full archive of AAA publications, curated into issues, and will be freely available on the internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full text of these articles.

A really important, exciting idea.? Pretty cool, no?? There must be some kind of catch, right?? Oh wait, this just in:

There will be a specific policy for Open Anthropology on ?ungating? and perhaps ?re-gating? content after a certain period of time. We hope to make anthropological content more accessible and draw more people to anthropological data and analysis, but also ensure that AAA is able to maintain a financially viable, sustainable publishing program while serving its members and the wider public.

That would be the catch.? Did you see it?? Here it is again:

There will be a specific policy for Open Anthropology on ?ungating? and perhaps ?re-gating? content after a certain period of time.

Re-gating?? What on earth is that?? How is that open access?? So the AAA is going to do open access, but not really.? It?s like ?kind of open access? and then not open anymore.? I think they need a new name for the publication they are proposing here.? Maybe ?Open and then no so open anthropology??? ?Part-time open anthropology, except on weekends, holidays, Mondays, and blackout dates??? That has a nice ring to it.? How about this: ?Open anthropology with an asterisk??? ?Open For A Limited Time Offer Anthropology??? ?Oops who left the gate open anthropology??? One last one: ?I can?t believe it?s open oh wait it?s really not anthropology??? I like that one.? Really hits the nail on the head.? Anyway, enough of the tomfoolery.

I don?t know, folks.? This doesn?t make any sense to me.? Why come up with all these great ideas and then pull back the ?open? part of open access?? Making an open access publication is the whole point!? This would be like announcing the opening of an all new public park and then telling people later on, ?Well, ok, you can go there for a week or so but after that it?s going to be locked up again.?? What?s the point?

So there?s the latest open access news.? I applaud the AAA for this new effort.? But, in the spirit of ?re-gating,? I take it back and un-applaud them for throwing in the lame caveat.? Come on AAA folks, if you are going to do it, then do it right.

Health Exchange News: Ariz. Looks To Feds, Conn. And Co. Move ...

Arizona's Gov. Jan Brewer has decided Arizona will not implement?a key part of the health law.

Reuters: Arizona Declines To Set Up State-Based Health Insurance Exchange
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said on Wednesday she was rejecting a major provision of President Barack Obama's health care reform law that calls for creating state-based health insurance markets where consumers can purchase private, federally subsidized coverage. Citing lingering questions about the plan and operating costs she said would be passed on to families and small businesses, Brewer, a Republican, said Arizona would join at least 16 other states in opting instead for a federally run health insurance exchange (Schwartz, 11/28).

Politico Pro: Arizona Nixes State-Run Exchange
"[T]hough I am a steady advocate of local control, I have come to the conclusion that the state of Arizona would wield little actual authority over its 'state' exchange," Brewer said in a statement. "The federal government would maintain oversight and control over virtually every aspect of our exchange, limiting our ability to meet the unique needs of Arizonans and the Arizona insurance market" (Millman, 11/28).

The Associated Press/MSN: Arizona's Governor Chooses Not To Form State-Run Health Care Exchange?Under Federal Law
Her announcement preceded a Dec. 14 deadline for states to declare whether they'd run their own exchanges. A decision to create an exchange would have been subject to approval by the Republican-led state Legislature.?... a Brewer push to create a state-run exchange would have faced a fight from GOP lawmakers who oppose the law. An alliance of hospitals, insurance companies and business groups wanted Arizona to have a state-run exchange, arguing that it would increase coverage while giving the state flexibility (Davenport, 11/28).

The Hill: Arizona Governor Rejects State-Based Insurance Exchange
Republican governors are under pressure from conservatives to reject state-based exchanges. They hope pushing the task to HHS will strain federal resources, a potential avenue to chip away at the Affordable Care Act without repealing it outright. But that strategy comes with practical risks. It gives the federal government more control over states' healthcare marketplaces?(Baker, 11/28).

Other states are already busy considering what the new exchange will look like and how it will pay for itself by 2015, a stipulation of the health law --

CT Mirror: What Exactly Will The New Insurance Exchange Offer?
A year from now, state residents will have a new marketplace for buying health insurance -- think of it like a virtual store for health plans. And the policymakers at work developing the rules for the market are facing a key question about how much discretion to use in determining which health plans it will sell.?Put another way: How selective should the shopkeeper be about what products stock its shelves? (Becker, 11/28).

Health Policy Solutions?(a Colo. news service): Colorado Health Exchange Must Pay For Itself By 2015
Now a reality across the country as the Affordable Care Act steams toward full implementation, health exchanges are supposed to make it easier for individuals and small business owners to choose and buy health insurance plans. ... Colorado's exchange ? which will soon have a new name ? is slated to open for enrollment in October of next year with coverage that will start on Jan. 1, 2014. By Jan. 1, 2015, Colorado's health exchange must be financially self-sustaining (Kerwin McCrimmon, 11/28).

(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, File)

(AP) ? Online deals company LivingSocial is cutting 400 jobs worldwide, or about 9 percent of its work force, as the deals market continues to face challenges.

LivingSocial spokesman Andrew Weinstein said Thursday that all but a few dozen of the cuts are in the United States. The company's sales force faced the highest number of cuts, while others are in customer service and editorial, the people paid to write up the deals. LivingSocial said it is moving its customer service operations to Tucson, Ariz., from Washington, where it has its headquarters.

Weinstein said the job cuts came as part of a review of LivingSocial's global operations. He said the review was designed to make sure that the company has the resources it needs to invest in areas that are "critical to the future," such as marketing and mobile.

Over the past year or so, online deals have gone from fad to a much-copied business model that's easy to set up but difficult to sustain. LivingSocial is one of the largest of the online deals companies, behind No. 1 Groupon Inc.

The job cuts came a day after Groupon CEO Andrew Mason said "it would be weird" if his board wasn't discussing whether he was the right person for the job amid the company's poor stock performance. His possible ouster was reported by AllThingsD and elsewhere.

Groupon's stock fell 2 cents to $4.40 in afternoon trading Thursday. The Chicago-based company went public in November 2011 at $20 per share. Earlier this month, Groupon reported a small loss for its third quarter. While its revenue grew by a third, it wasn't as high as Wall Street had hoped due largely to the weak economy in Europe.

Groupon's growth rate has steadily declined: In the fourth quarter of 2011, in its first earnings report as a public company, Groupon said its revenue nearly tripled. That fell to 89 percent in the first quarter of this year, 45 percent in the second quarter and 32 percent in the third.

Amazon.com Inc. has a small stake in LivingSocial, which is a privately held company.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini With LTE ? Meet The Samsung Galaxy Axiom (US Cellular)

At the end of October we?ve explored the possibility that the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini could arrive in the US, and sure enough, a few weeks later we got word that the device might arrive in the States bearing a different moniker and with slightly different specs.

The Samsung Galaxy Axiom has been rumored before but now the gadget is official, so in case you?ve kept a close eye on this one you may want to join us after the break and find out more details about it, where to buy it and at what price.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini With LTE ? Meet The Samsung Galaxy Axiom (US Cellular)

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini With LTE ? Meet The Samsung Galaxy Axiom (US Cellular)

The Axiom has now been made available for purchase on these shores through US Cellular and if you?re interested in buying one then you might be happy to find out that the carrier is offering the gadget for free ($0.01) as long as you?re willing to sign a 2-year agreement. US Cellular claims that the on-contract price varies depending on the region, but we have yet to see the gadget being priced higher than $0.01 on-contract.

Alternatively, you can also buy the handset off-contract and if that thought is right up your alley then the Axiom will set you back $399.99.

Spec-wise, the Samsung Galaxy Axiom differs in certain aspects when compared with its S3 Mini sibling, and although they both share many similarities, such as the 4-inch 480 x 800 display, 1 GB of RAM, expandable storage and an overall similar design, the Axiom is not limited to 3G speeds, as it comes with a 4G LTE radio, and it?s powered by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm CPU instead of a 1 GHz NovaThor SoC.

However, but the bad news is that the Axiom arrives with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, whereas the Mini packs Jelly Bean.

But, in case you?re interested in the off-contract device then you could buy the unlocked Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, in the US, via Amazon for $399.99, so you have the option of picking between a higher frequency CPU and LTE, or Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

But, I?m doubtful that many people are interested on buying the handset unlocked as it?s more expensive than an LG Nexus 4 at the Google Play Store (if you?re lucky enough to buy one?) so if you want to get it alongside a contract then visit US Cellular?s webpage and see what?s what.

Thanks Android Central for the heads-up regarding the Samsung Galaxy Axiom availability and price.

Fine clothes could be made from slimy hagfish threads

6 hrs.

When threatened, ancient bottom-dwelling marine creatures known as hagfish can produce a milk-jug?s worth of gelatinous slime containing mucous and tens of thousands of protein threads. Researchers are investigating how to harvest those threads for use as petroleum-free textiles.

The protein threads secreted in the mucous of the ell-like hagfish have mechanical properties that rival those of spider silk, which is exceptionally strong for its weight and has the potential to out-perform petroleum-derived products such as Kevlar.

The problem with spiders is they ?cannot be farmed to yield high quantities of silk,? Atsuko Negishi, a research assistant in the integrative biology department at the University of Guelph, said in a news release. ?She?s leading the effort to make silky fibers from hagfish slime.

Her current research shows it is possible to make ?macroscopic? materials using proteins isolated from the slime. This isn?t enough to make the sort of fashionable bullet-proof body armor executives and celebrities wear on the streets of Bogot?, Colombia, but it?s a start.

Going forward, the team plans to study how to scale up production, as well as investigate how to use other hagfish proteins to make materials for medicine and industry.?

A paper on the research appeared earlier this fall in the journal Bio Macromolecules.

RIM loses in arbitration with Nokia, may have to pay royalties on BlackBerrys with WiFi

Thorsten Heins of RIM and Stephen Elop of Nokia

Nokia and RIM already have a troubled history whenever they come into contact, so it's no surprise that what truces they do have are fraying at the edges. Thanks to filings, we now know that RIM has lost a Swedish arbitration proceeding where it tried to extend a 2003 patent cross-licensing deal with Nokia to include WiFi devices; the wireless technology isn't covered, the arbitrator says, and RIM now has to either pay royalties worldwide or risk seeing its devices yanked from the market. Nokia isn't wasting any time pressuring the team in Waterloo into coughing up -- it's taking steps to enforce the decision in Canada, the UK and the US. RIM has so far turned down any comment, although it's more likely that their firm will cut a deal rather than risk a sweeping ban. Consider it another of the many hurdles for RIM to jump on the road to January 30th.

U.S. to honor Israel's Barak, outgoing architect of Iran policy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Outgoing Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak will receive the highest award he could be given by a U.S. secretary of defense when he visits the Pentagon on Thursday, three days after announcing his exit from political life next year.

The 70-year-old Barak, a leading strategist in confronting Iran over its nuclear program who has also served as Israel's prime minister and armed forces chief, has been a regular visitor to the Pentagon in recent years as tensions with Tehran simmer.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has known the Israeli leader since President Bill Clinton's administration, when Panetta was chief of staff and when Barak served in roles including foreign minister. Barak and Panetta speak regularly, with three conversations alone during the crisis in Gaza this month.

"He's been an important partner of the U.S. for a long time," one U.S. defense official told Reuters, adding he will receive the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service.

Should Barak's resignation prove permanent, his successor could come from the ranks of right-wing Likud party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been seen at odds with Washington over the best way to handle Iran.

Ex-Israeli general Moshe Yaalon, who has talked tough on Iran but is more circumspect among Netanyahu's advisors, is a possible candidate to succeed the more moderate Barak. He is the minister of strategic affairs and is a former chief of staff of the Israeli defense forces.

There has been speculation that Barak might even be replaced by the current foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, the Likud's more hawkish coalition partner.

"The fact is that none of us know," said Anthony Cordesman, at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The Pentagon announced that Panetta and Barak will address a news conference at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (1730 GMT).

(AP) ? An administration official says two of President Barack Obama's top negotiators on the "fiscal cliff" will meet separately on Thursday with leading lawmakers.

The sessions are seen as an important step in determining how the government will avoid a year-end package of tax increases and spending cuts that could throw the economy into recession.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner (GYT'-nur) and White House legislative chief Rob Nabors will meet on Thursday with House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the meetings had not yet been publicly announced.

The meetings will take place on Capitol Hill.

World Bank approves $500 million loan for Tunisia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The World Bank on Tuesday approved a $500 million loan to Tunisia to help it recover from the Arab Spring uprising that toppled the former regime, with another $700 million loan coming from other donors.

The loan, the World Bank's second since the revolution, aims to support Tunisia's economic recovery by providing funds to improve the business and financial sectors and reform social services, which are vital for reducing inequality.

The World Bank said the European Union and the African Development Bank are giving a further $700 million to support Tunisia's transition.

The loans show global development lenders support the direction of Tunisia's reforms, which aim to satisfy citizens' demands for jobs, social services and transparent government.

"The agreement signed today sends a clear signal about the historic changes under way in Tunisia," said Inger Andersen, the World Bank's vice president for Middle East and North Africa.

Part of the reform program will involve eliminating 10 percent of tax and customs regulations in some government ministries, increasing competition in the telecommunication sector, and expanding the new Access to Information Law.

Tunisia was the birthplace of the Arab Spring uprisings last year across the Middle East and North Africa, which toppled its ruler after an almost 23-year reign. Since then, the country has struggled to regain economic stability while dealing with political transition and a slowing global economy.

The government has also committed to helping the poor, as well as thousands of former political prisoners and others who suffered under the former president.

Tunisia's government has said it will need about 7 billion dinars of loans and aid next year as it proceeds with a costly plan to compensate former political prisoners freed by the 2011 revolution.

In August, Tunisia announced that it expected the World Bank and the African Development Bank to each lend it $500 million to support its budget.

The World Bank previously approved a loan for the country in June 2011.

Recreational Sport ? Steps to Follow When Choosing Your Leisure ...

How do you know which recreational sport is right for you? Though this is a simple question, it may not have a simple answer. Before answering this question, it makes sense to know the definition of a recreational sport. In simple terms, a recreational sport is any sport activity or event that one engages in during leisure time. In other words, it is a sport activity or event performed primarily for entertainment and fun. Though in some cases there may be monetary rewards associated with passtime sport, it is not usually the main goal. Other reasons associated with participating in a leisure activities includes: fitness, health, socialization, competition and sport support among others.

There are several options of leisure activities available for all age categories ranging from indoor to outdoor. Making the decision on which choice to pursue can be a real challenge and this varies significantly from one person to the other. For former professional athletes, the decision may be easier especially if they continue participating in their particular former professional sports (i.e. recreational level). The big task of choosing the right recreational sport is however on beginners. In order to make the right choice(s) if you are a beginner, it is important to consider the following general guidelines:

1. Choose a sport that you understand and are passionate about: Leisure sport in a way becomes part of your lifestyle and therefore needs to be entertaining and enjoyable. Choosing something that you don?t like or have no knowledge about can be frustrating even if your friends adore it. It only makes sense to pursue something that you know its rules and regulations. However, this does not mean one cannot learn a new sport or game, but it easier to do so if you love the sport.

2. Consider your goals and objectives: As mentioned above, there are different reasons that drive people into recreational sports. Choosing a sport that is in line with your goals, for example losing weight will only enrich the whole recreational experience. Some one looking for a recreational sport to aid in cutting down some extra body weight may benefit from running, jogging, walking, hiking or swimming among other high calorie burning sport activities as opposed to playing cards or video games. On the other hand somebody looking for a recreational sport that favors socialization may benefit from the latter.

3. Facilities, tools and equipment required: Different recreational sports may require different tools, facilities or equipment or in some cases may require none at all. These tools, facilities or equipment may also vary depending on the needs of every person. For example if you want to play golf for recreation, you will definitely have to purchase a golf club, balls and perhaps shoes. You will also need an available and accessible golf course to play. In some cases if you have more than one favorite recreational sport, you may have to choose what is more convenient based on availability of facilities. It makes more sense to go running at a nearby track especially if you get off work late in the evenings than having to drive for several miles to get to a golf course (i.e. if you like both golf and running).

4. Availability of time: Since a recreational sport is a pastime sport, choosing the right one may be dictated by how much free time is at one?s disposal. Some leisure sports are more time consuming than others. Additionally some of these sports must only be played outside. Where as some sports such as running, jogging, walking, playing tennis, playing basketball or swimming offers both indoor and outdoor options, some of them, for example playing golf, hiking, kayaking, surfing among other don?t. The more time one has, the more the options to choose from and the vice versa.

5. Seasonality: Though this may not be a big deal to people living along the equatorial line geographically, it definitely affects people living in areas with winter and summer climatic seasons. Some recreational sports such as those requiring snow may only be available during winter and only in some parts of the world. So if skiing is the only favorite recreational sport that one can participate in, it means there will be nothing to do for most of the year i.e. during the other seasons. When deciding on the right sport for recreation, it is advisable to have more than one option especially in a situation where one is affected by seasonal changes.

6. Number of participants required: Where as most sports require participation of more than one person at one time, some can be pursued individually. If your schedule does not allow group or team participation, choosing a recreational sport that will enable you to participate alone is a good idea. Jogging, walking, swimming, biking and running are great examples.

As mentioned earlier, this is not an exhaustive list of guidelines, but it is only meant to give you an idea of how to pick the best sport that will make your recreational life a success. Remember the bottom line is fun and entertainment.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's leader, having failed to block the Palestinians from taking their quest for a state to the U.N., defiantly declared Thursday that they would have to back down from long-held positions if they ever hope to gain independence.

Ahead of Thursday's vote, thousands of Palestinians from rival factions celebrated in the streets of the West Bank. In a departure from its previous opposition, the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip said they would not interfere with the U.N. bid, and its supporters joined some of the celebrations.

Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas turned to the United Nations after four years of deadlock in Mideast peace efforts. While the initiative, all but certain to pass, will not immediately bring about independence, Palestinians hope the strong international endorsement will give them more leverage in future negotiations with Israel.

Speaking to reporters in New York, Abbas said diplomatic pressure to abandon the initiative was "tremendous," but that he would not be deterred.

"We said our word, and the vote will take place," he said.

The resolution calls for a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected a pullback to the 1967 lines, saying it would threaten Israeli security. Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem are now home to some 500,000 Israelis.

Netanyahu warned the Palestinians on Thursday that they would not win their hoped-for state until they recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland, declare an end to their conflict with Israel and agree to security arrangements to protect Israel.

"The resolution in the U.N. today won't change anything on the ground," Netanyahu declared. "It won't advance the establishment of a Palestinian state, but rather, put it further off."

The Palestinians have resisted demands to recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland, saying it would undermine the claims of Palestinian refugees and their millions of descendants scattered across the world.

Israel says Palestinian the demand for refugees to return to what is now Israel is an illegitimate attempt to undermine the Jewish character of their state. Instead, Israel says refugees should be resettled in a future Palestine alongside Israel.

General Assembly recognition on Thursday of Palestine will not actually deliver a state, end the Israeli occupation or reunify the Palestinians, who are ruled by dueling governments in the West Bank and Gaza.

But the Palestinians hope U.N. recognition will add weight to their claims.

Israel, like the U.S., argues that the Palestinians can win a state only through negotiations, and both countries mounted an aggressive campaign to try to head off the General Assembly vote.

The U.N. bid is crucial to maintaining Abbas' leadership. The Islamic militant Hamas group's standing in the Arab world has risen as changes sweep the Mideast, while Abbas' Fatah movement, which governs the West Bank, has been sidelined and marginalized, in large part because of his failure to deliver a state through diplomacy. Hamas got a major boost earlier this month, claiming victory after battling Israel in eight days of hostilities that ended with an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire.

The rival Palestinian governments emerged after Hamas seized Gaza from Abbas in 2007, reducing his control to parts of the West Bank.

Hamas supporters took part in Thursday's celebrations. In the West Bank city of Hebron, some in a crowd of several thousand raised green Hamas flags, while in the city of Ramallah, senior figures of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two militant groups normally opposed to Abbas, addressed the crowd.

"It's the right step in the right direction," Nasser al-Shaer, a former deputy prime minister from Hamas, said of the U.N. bid.

In Hamas-ruled Gaza, several thousand took to the streets, most of them Abbas loyalists. Marchers hoisted Palestinian flags and chanted, "We want our state, today is our date."

In Jerusalem, about 30 Israeli activists opposing the bid tried to burn a Palestinian flag near a U.N. building in Jerusalem, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. One person was arrested.

Israel has tempered its threats of retaliation, appearing to back off from plans to immediately punish the Palestinians for the initiative.

Months ago it suggested new settlement construction would be Israel's response to the Palestinians' statehood bid. Now officials are saying they will wait to see whether the Palestinians use their new standing to pursue war crimes charges against Israel in the International Criminal Court, a U.N. body. If so, they threaten punitive measures but have not given details.

Backing for the Palestinians' appeal to the U.N. came from an unexpected quarter Thursday, when former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was quoted as saying the Palestinian request "is congruent with the basic concept" of the two-state solution.

"Therefore, I see no reason to oppose it," said Olmert, according to The Daily Beast news website. An Olmert spokesman did not return a call for comment.

Olmert, Abbas and their teams conducted peace talks in 2007 through early 2009, but never clinched a deal.

Pressure mounts for retraction of GM crop-cancer study

Andy Coghlan, reporter

Pressure is growing for retraction of a study which concluded that a genetically modified maize and a weedkiller called glyphosate cause cancers in rats.

The study attracted criticism from the moment it was published on 19 September. Yesterday, it was dismissed as having "serious defects" in a final report on the matter by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and independently by the food safety panels of six European countries. They say too few rats were used to justify the conclusions linking Monsanto's NK603 maize and glyphosate with cancers in the rats.

Researchers now want Food and Chemical Toxicology, the Elsevier journal that published the original study (DOI: 10.1016/j.fct.2012.08.005), to retract it. "Given that the EFSA concludes that the authors' conclusions cannot be regarded as scientifically sound because of inadequacies in the design, reporting and analysis, is it not time for Food and Chemical Toxicology to retract the manuscript?" asked Cathie Martin of the John Innes Center in Norwich, UK, and editor-in-chief of another journal, The Plant Cell.

"The consistency of the critique from several national risk-evaluation agencies should prompt Elsevier to re-evaluate the standards of peer review at its journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology," said Maurice Moloney, director of Rothamsted Research in Harpenden, UK.

Study flaws

The?EFSA?concluded that the researchers, led by Gilles-Eric S?ralini of the University of Caen in France, failed to use enough rats in the study to draw statistically valid conclusions about whether the GM food or glyphosate they were fed caused extra cancers compared with control rats. Furthermore, says the authority, the researchers relied on strains of rats that frequently develop tumours spontaneously, especially in old age.

"Conclusions cannot be drawn on the difference in tumour incidence between the treatment groups on the basis of the design, the analysis and the results as reported," says the review of the study. The same conclusion was reached independently by six national food safety bodies also asked to review the study, from Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and Belgium.

The EFSA and the panels say that S?ralini used a fifth as many rats as would be required for standard, internationally accepted toxicology testing, making his conclusions statistically unreliable. "Given the spontaneous occurrence of tumours in Sprague-Dawley rats, the low number of rats reported in the S?ralini publications is insufficient to distinguish between specific treatment effects and chance occurrences of tumours in rats," says the authority.

It also criticised S?ralini for failing to supply additional information demanded by the authority.

The EFSA?found the NK603 maize strain to be safe in 2003. In its report this week, it declared that there is no need to re-evaluate the safety of the maize or the herbicide.

S?ralini's backersclaim that he's the victim of a "covert war" orchestrated by supporters of GM technology to discredit criticism. "Behind the cohort of academic titles [of critics] that are listed is a hidden 'biotech sphere' which brings together biotechnology researchers, regulatory policy experts and representatives of industry," says a statement from CRIIGEN, the France-based Committee for Research & Independent Information on Genetic Engineering, which opposes GM crops and supported S?ralini's study.

The study is the second in recent years by S?ralini to assess the safety of NK603. His first study was also critised. New Scientist wrote at the time: "Independent toxicologists contacted by New Scientist said S?ralini's analysis overplays the importance of minor variations that most experienced toxicologists would consider to be random background noise."

Toshiba preps 13MP phone camera sensor that promises lowlight shooting without the noise

Toshiba isn't the most vocal of mobile camera designers; it's often shouted out by the likes of OmniVision and Sony. It has reason to crow now that it's near launching a next-generation imager of its own. The 13-megapixel, CMOS-based TK437 sensor carries the backside illumination we already know and love for its low-light performance as well as color noise reduction that should fight the side-effects of such a dense, sensitive design. If we take Toshiba at its word, the visual quality of the sensor's 1.12-micron pixels is equal to that of much larger, less noise-prone 1.4-micron examples -- important when stuffing the sensor into 0.33 square inches. Photos will prove whether the achievement is more than just talk, although we'll have some time to wait when test samples will only reach companies in December. It's months beyond that before there's a production phone or tablet with a TK437 lurking inside.

Open Hand, Open Heart: Ministry to Young Mothers

It occurs to me that 21st century realities for young mothers ? particularly for young mothers willing to have larger families ? are quite different than they were thirty years ago, or fifty. In ?the old days? ? back when my mother had me, for instance, and my Mother-in-Law had my husband ? families were larger to start with, and extended family members lived nearby. My grandmother lived with us; my husband?s grandmother lived a few blocks away; one aunt lived right up the street and another around the corner. A new mother had some resources to help her out, another pair of hands to catch a running kid; someone to sit with for a tea-break and an hour?s adult conversation.

Families are smaller, these days. Those young women who are nurturing ?big? families rarely have family members who live within hollering distance; siblings are few and often living in another state and aunts and grandmas are off ?having it all.?

Calah Alexander has written one of those brutally honest pieces about the trials, frustrations and fears that go hand-in-hand with mothering small children but she has added to it the twist that obedient Catholicism brings to the drama.

There is freedom in obedience but it can sometimes seem very hard to find when life is a blur of small, unruly people who are in constant states of screaming need and one?s post-partum chemistry is all afoul; a sincere attempt at religious obedience can feel like oncoming death or madness, especially if one is not getting some sound spiritual direction, and a little help. People who have no idea what it?s like to not even be alone while in the bathroom ? to have no spare minute in which to collect oneself or re-tether oneself to heaven ? cannot possibly imagine the strain.

Reading Calah?s piece, I couldn?t help but wonder why parishes do not have a ?young mother?s ministry?. We have Consolation/Funeral Ministry, Divorced Men?s Ministry, Teen-group Ministry, Bereavement Ministry; why not a Ministry of Succor meant to help young mothers who have passed that ?new baby? moment when everyone wants to help and are now in the thick of the everyday demands of motherhood ? just her and the brood and hours of unrelieved, lonely coping.

I?m envisioning a ministry whereby older moms ? perhaps women confronting an empty nest, or those facing retirement with some time on their hands ? can simply visit with a young mom for an hour or so, a couple times a week ? at home or in a park ? and be present to her in a reassuring, and most importantly, confidential way.

I am not talking about babysitting, about some woman coming in while the young mother flees for the hour ? and I?m not talking about someone who helps with the housework ? I?m thinking about something more in line with a woman able to come in and take one kid into her lap, and maybe rock it to sleep, while the young mother deals with another kid but also has a chance to talk, spill, vent, cry; a woman who might be a prayer companion in those moments; a woman who can identify ? who understands that the young mother is neither nuts nor incompetent, just overwhelmed; a woman who can reassure her that things get better ? that the job of motherhood never becomes ?easy? but it gets more manageable.

So, basically, I?m thinking a mother?s companion ministry; a ?mothering presence? to a young mother ? someone who might pour them both a cup of tea, hold a hand and say ?yes, these small people are little packages of lunacy, joy and sorrow entrusted to you. Aren?t they beautiful? And doesn?t time speed by so quickly?? A voice to bring a little perspective into a life that currently seems telescopically narrowed.

It would involve some training, I think. Some training in ?listening? skills, in facilitating and it what it means to simply ?be there? for someone else, for no other reason than the love of God. To be Christ for a young mother; to be Mary, and simply hear her, love her, pray with her.

Most importantly, it would require a rock-solid commitment to confidentiality; such a ministry would be useless to any young mother if she felt there was no safety in her venting, or if she had to worry about gossip.

My husband and I used to facilitate a youth group ? we took on kids in the 9th grade and they met weekly in our home until graduation from high school, just to talk, to be able to have a free, safe place in which to talk about anything they wanted, address sensitive issues or toss off challenging questions about church and the life of faith. We went through training for it, and yes, we signed a confidentiality agreement and the kids did, too. Barring something criminal or unsafe, what was said at a meeting stayed at the meeting. We did it for eight years, because it was a thing very much worth doing. People need to know they are seen and heard. Young moms need it, especially.

Seems to me, a ministry of succor to young moms might be worth doing, too. And it?s kind of part-and-parcel of ?Becoming Apocalypse? for each other.

I?d love to know if such programs are already alive in some Catholic parishes?

Europe sees US debt crisis as dire as its own

1 day

Now it?s Europe?s turn to worry about U.S. economy.

American officials have been wringing their hands for the past two years about the heavy burden of government debt piling up in Europe. On Tuesday, Europe?s Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development warned that the U.S. "fiscal cliff" threatens prospects for the eurozone?s economic recovery.

?We?re talking here about the medium and long-term viability of the United States economy,? OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria told CNBC. ?Not only to avoid the fiscal cliff but then get to a moment where (U.S.) debt stops rising and the debt to GDP starts coming down to an area where we call all breathe more comfortably.?

In its latest Economic Outlook, the influential Paris-based think tank said that?with the eurozone?s economy already headed in reverse, the United States faces the same fate if lawmakers fail to agree a deal to avoid a combination of tax hikes and budget cuts that will otherwise take effect next year.

?The US ?fiscal cliff,' if it materializes, could tip an already weak economy into recession, while failure to solve the euro-area crisis could lead to a major financial shock and global downturn,? Gurria told reporters in Paris.

Even if a deal is reached, the OECD joined other forecasters calling for a continued global economic slowdown in 2013. For the U.S., that means expansion of just 2.0 percent, versus the OECD's 2.6 percent forecast in May.

The eurozone economy is expected to shrink by 0.4 percent this year and another 0.1 percent next year, before recovering at a weak 1.3 percent growth rate in 2014, the forecasters said.

Negotiations in Washington continued this week on a broad range of alternatives to the current budget law, which would impose roughly half a billion dollars in government spending cuts and tax increases starting Jan. 1. Uncertainty over the outcome has depressed hiring and investment by businesses, some economists say.

On Monday, White House economists estimated that the budget measure, unless altered or postponed, would carve some $200 billion out of consumer spending, which accounts for about two thirds of the U.S. economy. Together with deep cuts in government spending, the package would wipe out the current weaker recovery and shrink the U.S. economy by about 0.5 percent in 2013, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

Congress and the White House have been deadlocked on solutions since the law was enacted after a bitter battle in July 2011 over increasing the government?s legal borrowing authority. Though President Barack?Obama and Republican leaders have made conciliatory comments since the November election, there has been little in the way of concessions needed to reach a compromise.

Most observers believe that the worst of the tax hikes will be avoided ? if only because they would be so politically unpopular. The so-called Alternative Minimum Tax, for example, would ensnare some 28 million households with new taxes next year unless Congress once again agrees to a ?patch.?

But broad compromise on reforming the thicket of deductions, exemptions and other breaks in the tax code, along with restructuring the massive Medicare and Social Security entitlement programs, will be much harder to pull off.

?I think it is a romantic hope that to believe that these politicians can agree to a grand bargain that will fundamentally fix our budget deficit issue,? said Richard Hoey, chief economist at BNY Mellon. ? I think that is totally unrealistic.?

That kind of sweeping fundamental reform has eluded European governments for years.

On Monday, facing the latest precipice in their two-year saga trying to head off a Greek debt default, European leaders hammered out yet another bailout package that calls on the Greek government to pare down its debt in the coming decade.

But while the latest plan appeared to buy more time, the threat of the longer-term crisis remains.

?Athens? cash reserves must be down to vapors,? said Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics. ?Any interruption in implementation of this scheme could cause an ugly default, with little or no warning.?

The details of the latest ?solution? are murky, and the plan still faces opposition from both individual eurozone governments and potential legal challenges.

Terms of a proposed buyback of Greek debt that would leave some bond holders with losses haven?t been worked out. And the 44 billion euro ($53 billion) bailout payments over the next two months will be made in stages ? with each new payment conditioned on Athens meeting milestones called for by its European benefactors.?

The longer term solution to Europe's debt crisis is even murkier - a possible portent of what U.S. lawmakers face if they can't work out a broad tax and spending compromise soon.?

How to manage stress at work - Healthy & Fit Magazine | Mid ...

Two out of five Americans feel stressed at work, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association. Even if you leave your paperwork at the office the stress is likely to follow you home. Stress at work can have a significant impact on your physical and mental health. It?s not good for the business either. Lost productivity, insurance claims, health costs, accidents and replacing lost workers cost industry in the U.S. billions each year. Work related stress is inevitable but you can manage it better with these suggestions.

Takin? Care of Business

Your business that is. You are your best?asset. While you may not be able to control the chaos at work you can control what you put in your mouth and how you take care of your body and that will yield ?healthy dividends to offset the side effects of stress. Keeping yourself fueled with nutritious foods will provide staying power and keep you energized for the workday. Choosing vending machine options or break room pastries may seem like a great boost at first but the quick sugar buzz will leave you foraging for more. The key is planning ahead says Kelsey Stricklen,a Registered?Dietitian?at Cherry Street Health Services in Grand Rapids. ?When we don?t plan ahead we tend to gravitate towards unhealthy choices. Not planning ahead can even increase your stress level and cost you more time and money,? says Stricklen. ?Buy healthy snacks like fruit, veggies, nuts, baked chips, fiber and granola bars then portion them out into small baggies based on a single serving size. Each day on your way out the door you can just grab your pre-portioned snack.?

If you?re going to be stuck at work, plan for beverages too. Use your own BPA-free water bottle. If plain water doesn?t wet your whistle ? liven it up. Stricklen suggest adding cucumbers, lemon or lime for flavor. Stash your desk or locker with herbal or green tea bags and low-fat hot chocolate. Coffee still reigns for the 3 o?clock fix, especially now with recent studies saying coffee could reduce the risk Parkinson?s disease, type 2 Diabetes, prostate cancer, and liver cancer to name a few. Just avoid adding too much sugar and flavored creamers.

Whistle While You Work

?Paying attention to when your body signals you are tense is important so you can learn to take the time to release tension,? says Maribeth Janer,LMSW, clinical social worker and therapist of Northville. ?Turning on some quiet back-ground music, even for a short time, especially while closing our eyes and letting your mind wander a bit can help.? Sometimes it?s just good to get off your chair and move. ?Stand and stretch for a few moments every hour, as well as taking a few minutes to breathe in and out slowing while looking out a window or a different view,? suggests Janer. Christine Anthony of Beulah does just that and more.?I don?t stock pile stuff on my desk to put away at the end of the day, I get up and put it away when I?m done with it and I use the restroom farthest away.? Stepping away from your work, even for a few minutes will likely give you a fresh perspective and make you more productive. Need help reminding yourself to actually do this? Set your cell phone alarm every hour or two and get moving!

Internal Affairs

Juggling work and family is tough enough for anyone. Add a heavier workload and stress compounds.?The key here is to set goals that need to be done in a given day, and then let go of the rest as much as possible,? suggests Janer. Can you divide and conquer and work with another colleague? Or is this a continuous issue that you need to discuss with your supervisor??Janer recommends confronting the situation head on. ?Often assumptions are made regarding what others are doing or wanting that can be inaccurate, so by trying to discuss your thoughts about the problem, it may be possible to relieve a great deal of stress, says Janer.??Christina Rogers, a former resident of Lake Ann now living in California, approached her boss when other workers weren?t carrying their fair share of the load. ?I spoke with my boss and and he observed us over cameras and took care of the situation.? Not every issue will be resolved in your favor but honest communication with co-workers and supervisors is essential to?negotiate a better working environment which could mean less stress for everyone.

VCU coach claims he lost job for being gay

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- The head VCU Women's Volleyball coach claims he lost his job because he is gay. Now, James Finley says an investigation has been launched by a new division of the University meant to support diversity.

Finley says he just got back from the Atlantic 10 Conference championship in Pittsburgh, where his team performed better than expected. He said a conference had been scheduled for him with new Athletic Director Ed McLaughlin upon his return.

"We sat down and he was just very short and simply said, 'We want to go in a new direction. We're not going to renew your contract. Thanks for your time.'"?recalled?Finley of the exchange with the new director, Ed McLaughlin. ?

Press release on decision

Finley said the decision came as a shock, given the team's performance.

"We were 25-6 this year," said Finley. "We moved into a new conference. We were picked to finish 6th and we finished 3rd. We made it to the semi-finals of the A10 Championship. We had a great season. It was the highest winning percentage that we've had with the volleyball program at VCU."

VCU Volleyball stats

Finley went on to point out that he was brought in to "fix a team in shambles."

He also pointed out that his players boasted a high grade-point average, and graduation rates in keeping with NCAA standards.

It's why Finley said he began to question why he was let go: "It's just unheard of for someone to have a winning record and just get let go."

Finley said McLaughlin spoke to his team shortly after he was let go and that what was said in this meeting gave him pause.

"He tells the girls that they need someone that represents the University well," said Finley. "And that really just stabbed me in the heart. Then I was like 'wow, this guy just absolutely doesn't want to have somebody gay on his staff.'"

Finley said his?conclusions don't just?stem from the decision not to renew his contract. He?pointed to a pattern of behavior that indicated discrimination.

Finley?claimed?the first time he ever spoke to the new athletic director, Ed McLaughlin, was to learn his?contract wouldn't be renewed. And he says McLaughlin regularly avoided him at social events with?athletes and donors. ?

"He would avoid me in public places," said Finley. "I would say hi to him and he wouldn't respond."

Finley also claimed that the only other openly gay employee at VCU was demoted. He says that's why he decided to speak out.

"Ultimately, I came to this decision that I had to stand up, because you know we have a lot of gay and lesbian student athletes," said Finley. "I can't let them down. They have depended on me to have a safe voice and a safe place to be. We should be judged on the job we do. We shouldn't be judged on who we love."

Finley says he would like his job back because he believes in VCU, but even if that doesn't work out, he's glad he spoke up -?and Finley's husband,?John Sternlicht, agrees.

"I hope and have faith that VCU will stick to its core principals of diversity and anti-discrimination," said Sternlicht.

The University is limited in its ability to respond to this story, because this does involve a personnel issue. However, they did confirm that Finley's contract will end at the end of the year and released the following:

"We adhere to federal and state laws and regulations that protect the privacy of our employees and the conditions of their employment. The employment action was taken in compliance with appropriate VCU employment practices and policies.

VCU and its athletic director, Ed McLaughlin, are fully committed to the core value of diversity ? as reflected in the university's diversity statement and strategic plan. ?As the Commonwealth's most diverse university, we practice the spirit of that policy statement every day."

- Pamela Lepley
VCU Spokesperson

"A core value of Virginia Commonwealth University ? and one that I personally share ? is diversity. ?I came to VCU because of how the university embraces diversity and inclusive excellence and fosters a community where differences are valued and respected. ?It is unfortunate that Mr. Finley feels the decision not to renew his contract was based on anything other than previously stated concerns about the volleyball program. ?As I said earlier this month, the VCU volleyball program needs new leadership if it is to achieve athletic and academic success at an elite level nationally. ?I am confident about the path ahead and the upcoming search for a new head coach."

- Ed McLaughlin
Director of Athletics

Search Challenge: Will the Plex be underwater? In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, everyone who lives near the coast keeps thinking about water levels-when something like Sandy comes racing up your shoreline, will you be swamped?

Or, more generally, as oceans levels rise, will my front yard become a permanent duck pond?

I live pretty close to the Plex, so let's try to figure out this important question for my workplace. (And what's true for the Plex will be true for my house as well!)

Question for this week: Will a sea level rise of 10 feet put the Plex under sea water, or will it just become beachfront property?

As usual, please let us know:

Seeing the world through the eyes of an orangutan

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A captive bred Sumatran orangutan and a University of Nottingham neuroscientist in Malaysia are hoping to explain some of the mysteries of the visual brain and improve the lives of captive bred animals.

She is a captive bred Sumatran orangutan. He is a neuroscientist specialising in cognitive and sensory systems research. With the help of specially adapted eye tracking equipment they are hoping to explain some of the mysteries of the visual brain and improve the lives of captive bred animals.

Dr Neil Mennie, from The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC), has received funding from Ministry of Science and Technology and Innovation, Malaysia (MOSTI) to study the eye movements of Tsunami -- a seven year old orangutan at The National Zoo of Malaysia (Zoo Negara). Not only will Dr Mennie's research address vital questions about the visual cognition of humans and apes in natural tasks, it will also provide valuable enrichment for the juvenile captive-born orangutan.

Dr Mennie said: "Orangutans are particularly interesting because to survive in the treetops they must be very spatially aware of their surroundings. I hope to investigate their ability to search for food and to compare their progress with humans in 3D search and foraging tasks."

Dr Mennie, who is from the Cognitive and Sensory Systems Research Group in the School of Psychology at UNMC, is interested in how humans and apes use their brains to learn and make predictions about our surroundings. With the help of Tsunami's keeper, Mohd Sharullizam Ramli, and the special eye tracking equipment that is worn over her head and shoulders, Dr Mennie has spent the last year recording Tsunami's eye and body movements during the performance of complex actions such as locomotion, foraging for food and manipulation of small objects.

Tracking the eyes of an Orangutan

Tsunami was slowly introduced to the idea of wearing the eye tracking equipment that consists of a back pack containing a wireless transmitter. This pack back transmits data from two video cameras mounted on her head-band. As Tsunami performs various natural tasks -- foraging for food, using tools, moving around -- one camera films what she sees and the other camera films the movements of her right eye. Afterwards Dr Mennie and his students sit down and look at each video frame from this camera and write down the timing and location of these eye movements over the environment. As we make 3 eye movements per second, this is a very time consuming procedure.

Dr Mennie said: "I'm interested in the way we make predictive eye movements to places in the world where the stimulus is yet to appear and whether these predictive eye movements are there to assist the timing and placement of actions or whether they also help high-level mechanisms such as memory for our immediate space and the location of objects within it."

As part of his research Dr Mennie is also hoping to shed light on how these endangered animals navigate to help other scientists who seek to conserve the orangutan habitat. Knowledge of their foraging and search behaviour may help in the design and conservation of forest corridors.

Improving the life of captive animals

Orangutans are a critically endangered species -- they are also among the most intelligent primates. The Sumatran orangutan is on the IUCN Critically Endangered list. At Zoo Negara they are hoping Dr Mennie's research will help them develop their Enrichment Programme that is designed to get captive animals behaving as they would in the wild.

In the wild Tsunami would use her vision and her hands to guide her through the environment -- to find food, to use tools, to move and climb. To make Dr Mennie's task even harder, orangutans can grasp equally well with their feet. Faradilla Ain Roselan, Zoology Officer at Zoo Negara Enrichment Centre, said: "We want to keep our animals occupied so they don't display stereo typical behaviour such as pacing. We also want them to be able to exhibit any natural behaviour. Apes are highly intelligent animals and we don't want them to get bored. If we predict what they want to do maybe we can think of an enrichment that would suit their intelligence."

Long term goals

Currently Tsunami is in a specially built enclosure and this is proving to be a very useful beginning. Eventually he hopes to track this young orangutan when she is allowed to join her fellow red apes and Dr Mennie's long term goal is to record animals in the wild.

Dr Mennie said: "I could have done this research at any zoo. But the orangutan is a flagship symbol of Malaysia and I think it is fitting that this research is done here in Malaysia at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus."

With funding from the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Dr Mennie has already studied Orangutan eye movements in free ranging behaviour. MOHE has also funded a project that looked at the predictive eye movements of humans when they play the Malaysian game Congkak.
