Power Matters Alliance garners support from BlackBerry, NEC, TI and ZTE

Another Mobile World Congress, another round of highfalutin' talk surrounding the concept of wireless power. We already witnessed a consumer approach by PowerbyProxi, and now we're hearing that the Power Matters Alliance is getting a second wind as well. The self-proclaimed "leading ecosystem and standard for wireless power" took to Boston-area Starbucks locations last fall, and now it has notched support from BlackBerry, NEC, Texas Instruments, ZTE and dozens more. There's still no word on whether all of these factions are going to bite the bullet and come together in order to actually make some progress that consumers can appreciate, but hey -- we've got nothing but time, right?

Google Settings app sneaks onto Android to bolster G SignIn

If you're wondering what that pretty green icon is that may have popped up recently on your Android device, worry not -- it's just the new Settings app from Google. You can now access preferences from Maps, Google+ and Search from one place through the app, and also see which are hooked in to the new Google+ Sign-In system we saw yesterday. Google took the unusual step of installing the app without asking via a Google Play service update, and if you haven't seen it yet you can force the issue by going to the application manager, clearing the data from Google Play services and rebooting. With its various apps becoming more intertwined, it wouldn't be surprising if Google dumped more settings there in the future, so you may as well get a handle on it now.

Older couple wanted for Mars mission

A team led by millionaire and former space tourist Dennis Tito plans to send a "tested couple" to Mars and back in a privately funded mission.

The Inspiration Mars Foundation plans to start its one-and-a-half-year mission in January 2018.

The foundation has carried out a study which it says shows that it is feasible to achieve such a mission using existing technology.

The group still has to raise funding for their mission.

I can attest from personal experience that having somebody that you really deeply trust and care for was an extraordinary thing to have?

End Quote Jane Poynter Paragon Space Development Corporation

Among those involved in the project is Jane Poynter, who spent two years locked away in a sealed ecosystem with seven other people in 1991 which she described as a "New Age Garden of Eden".

She told BBC News that the mission planners wanted the crew to consist of an older couple whose relationship would be able to withstand the stress of living in a confined environment for two years.

"I can attest from personal experience from living in Biosphere 2 that having somebody that you really deeply trusted and cared for was an extraordinary thing to have," Ms Poynter explained.

Ms Poynter, who ended up marrying one of those involved in the Biosphere 2 project, Taber Macallum, admitted that it could be "challenging" for the couple. But said that the selection process would attempt to find "resilient people that would be able to maintain a happy upbeat attitude in the face of adversity".

The plan was to choose a middle-aged couple because their health and fertility would be less affected by the radiation they would be exposed to during such a long space mission.

Dennis Tito: "It's been outstanding from a scientific standpoint. We have not made nearly the same progress in human space flight"

The couple would receive extensive training and would be able to draw on psychological support from mission control throughout the mission.

Ms Poynter's expectation is that a couple journeying to Mars would be "inspirational".

"We want the crew of vehicle to represent humanity," she said. "We want the youth of the world to be reflected in this crew and for girls as well as boys to have role models".

Space historian, Prof Christopher Riley of Lincoln University, believes that sending a couple to Mars might be a good idea.

"The idea of sending older astronauts on longer duration missions, after they have had children, has been around for a while. The reasoning is that such a long duration mission, outside of the protective magnetosphere of the Earth, could leave them infertile," he said.

"Married couples have occasionally flown in space before, on short flights, and it seemed to work well, so why not."

It takes mavericks like Tito to create pivot points in history where significant things happen?

End Quote Prof Christopher Riley Lincoln University

However results emerging from the so-called Mars500 project suggests that even carefully screened individuals are likely to suffer from psychological problems from a prolonged space mission.

The mission will be a straightforward flight to the Red Planet and return without landing. This greatly reduces the cost of the mission. The Mars Inspiration team believe that it is technically possible to launch such a mission in five years' time.

The Mars Inspiration team is aiming for a January 2018 launch because it coincides with a close alignment of Mars and Earth, such that a round trip would take about a year-and-a half, or 501 days - whereas outside of this window such a trip might take two or three years .

Many believe that new technologies will need to be developed to deal with the extended periods of radiation such a trip would involve and to cope with supplying food and water for the crew.

The Mars Inspiration team says that it has carried out a feasibility study for the mission which it plans to release on Sunday. Anu Ojha, from the British National Space Centre in Leicester has seen the study.

He says that it is theoretically possible to go to Mars and back using the Dragon and Falcon Heavy systems manufactured by California-based firm SpaceX.

Loo roll crunch

But conditions would be squeezed and spartan, with no room for pressurised space suits. The report suggests that 1,360kg of dehydrated food will be enough to last the journey and the manifest includes 28kg of toilet paper for a crew of 2 for 500 days.

But the issue of radiation protection according to Mr Ojha is "glossed over" with the recognition that more work and "creative solutions" need to be explored. More work will also need to done to improve recycling technologies to convert urine into water.

The man leading the venture is Denis Tito, who paid 20 million dollars to become the first "tourist" in space. He spent six days on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2001.

The millionaire is financing part of the project but much more money needs to be raised. The organisers have not stated how much the mission will cost nor how much they need to raise, saying only that it is much cheaper than one would imagine a Mars mission to be. Ms Poynter did however confirm that a significant amount of money still needed to be raised.

Anu Ojha believes that unless the venture is 100% underwritten at this stage it won't get off the ground.

"If a bunch of billionaires have committed the approx $1-2bn required, then we could see history being made in under five years. If (at the) the press conference they say 'we have this fantastic concept but need the money - please give generously' then it's dead in the water," he told BBC News.

However Prof Riley is more optimistic. "There are lots of big ifs in trying to achieve this epic endeavour, but none which are totally insurmountable given enough money and assistance, and the will to do it," he said.

"It takes mavericks like Tito to create such pivot points in history where significant things happen, and such a trip would be as significant as Apollo 8's first circumnavigation of the Moon on Christmas Eve 1968, when the world listened in to the reflections of the first human beings to orbit another world.

"Perhaps fifty years later, on Christmas Eve 2018 we might be all tuning in to a similar broadcast from Mars. I hope so!"

The effort represents the latest development in private sector companies moving into space exploration. Last December, one of the last men on the Moon, Harrison Schmitt, told BBC News that he believed Nasa and other government run space agencies were "too inefficient" to be able to send astronauts back to the Moon.

Everything But The Chef's Hat: Cooking Tips | Super Cooking Tips

Learning how to prepare foods you like can be a variety of your individual lifestyle. The advice will provide you will all kinds of knowledge on cooking.

TIP! Reference your recipe to ensure you have the correct potatoes. There are three categories: mealy, waxy and all-purpose.

One effective way to cook some new flavors in your food is to change the spices and marinades you use. Something that people do not think of is shopping at ethnic groceries for new spice ideas.

TIP! Put citrus fruits in the microwave first to get the most out of juicing. Heat the orange or lemon, or other citrus fruit in your microwave for about ten seconds.

It is so easy to mistakenly add more salt than is needed, but don?t worry! Just chop up some raw potatoes and place them in the sauce, and allow them to boil in the gravy for 15 minutes. The potatoes absorb much of the excess salt. If it is a tomato sauce, you can put in additional tomatoes for the purpose of diluting the excessive salt.

TIP! You should discard your spices biannually and buy new ones. If you keep them longer than this, they may lose their flavor.

Use a generous amount of salt liberally in your pasta water used to cook pasta. The salt will infuse the pasta thoroughly. Salting pasta will not have the same effect.

TIP! Prepare everything you need to cook your food in advance. That way, you are able to prevent using a lot of gas or heat while cooking, and you provide safety when using hot oil or other dangerous things while distracted.

If your hands start to smell like the fish or onions that you are cooking, simply rub them on a piece of stainless steel prior to washing them with soap and water. You can use the sink itself, leaving them fresh.

Good cutting utensils are imperative to own for your kitchen. Dull knives actually cause more cut fingers and accidents than sharp ones.

Spices will rapidly lose flavor if exposed to heat, light and humidity. This just exposes them to the elements and other unfavorable conditions that zap all of their flavor.

TIP! To use leftover meat and veggies in your fridge prior to shopping try making fried rice in a wok. Rice is best when cooked the day before, but you can cut water content a little to get the right consistency with fresh rice.

Always use an airtight containers to store baking ingredients such as sugar or flour. Keeping your ingredients in sealed containers will keep them from spoiling or being infected with bugs. You buy them pretty much anywhere and at a beneficial asset.

It is absolutely essential that you have sharp knives when cooking. Dull knives are more dangerous to use and the certainly make chopping difficult.

This keeps fruits fresh and delicious for months. This is also gives you access to seasonal fruits that are out of season.

Fresh onions emit a gas. This excessive gas can end up ruining your batch of salsa. The gas is eliminated if you rinse and drying the diced onions.

TIP! It can be difficult to figure out how long you need to keep meat on the grill. Use a digital or other high-quality internal thermometer to check whether your meat is cooked enough.

Never prepare the entire amount after seasoning it. Cook a small piece of the mixture before you continue to cook the entire batch to ensure that the seasonings are correct.

Mashed Potatoes

TIP! Using brine in your food preparation is a culinary secret that can make your dishes go from bland to bursting with flavor. First soak your duck, goose, chicken or turkey in brine about an hour before you are ready to prepare it, and you poultry will have a wonderful flavor.

When it?s time to mash the potatoes for that good ole home-cooked taste, stir in hot (not boiling) milk to mix them. This will make your mashed potatoes that light and fluffier. Nobody really wants lumps in their mashed potatoes full of lumps.

TIP! Spices should be stored in a cool, dark area so that they stay as fresh as they can for as long as possible. Storing spices in warm locations, such as above the stove, can cause the spices to lose their flavor and you to lose your money.

Always measure any cooking oil you use. This will help you reduce how much fat in your foods while cooking. This will give you the ability to know exactly how much oil you use.

TIP! Preparation is key when cooking for family or friends. Look at your recipe, and ensure that you aren?t missing any ingredients.

Do you love to cook with fresh basil in your dishes? Take a bunch of this fresh herb and place it in a glass. Fill the glass just enough with water so that the stems are covered. Keep on a kitchen counter so it?ll be fresh for weeks! The basil may even start growing roots if you occasionally change out the water. Trim or cut the basil once in a while so it grows even more and stays fresh.

Chicken Broth

TIP! If you know that time will be limited the following day, try to do some of the prep for that night?s meal the day before. Decrease your stress level and enjoy your time in the kitchen by doing all the prep work ahead of time.

Add some chicken broth to your pan when you cook them. Chicken broth is an excellent base to use when preparing vegetable dishes that helps keep them from sticking and gives them some great flavor with them.

TIP! Keep your turkey leftovers after Thanksgiving. You can put them in meal-size containers and keep them in the freezer.

Dark leafy greens can be considered a pain to prepare, but they are a pain to prepare. The stem is the most difficult part of preparation is removing tough stems. Make it easy by folding the leaf lengthwise in half and breaking the stem. You could also slice the stems of the folded leaves with a knife.

Don?t use a type of wine in your meals that you wouldn?t drink. There are wines available that was made specifically for cooking.

You should always purchase fish and meat that are bone-in.

To make your French fries crispier, try leaving the raw potatoes in some cold water for half an hour before you fry them.

Set a watch timer that you can easily carry with you as well.

TIP! Going over labels on ingredients for what you?re going to make to eat is important to do. There are ingredients that may be unhealthy.

Impress your friends with a perfect sandwich by spreading the mayo evenly on the corners of the bread. An even spread helps keep the taste consistent from bite tastes as it should.

TIP! Many of the most popular fruits become brown when exposed to air: apples, bananas and pears, for example. While saltwater and lemon are both effective preservatives, pineapple juice is the best way to preserve your fruit without affecting its flavor.

Look at your recipes and determine whether or not certain steps that can be done ahead of time without having any spoilage issues. You can make a lot of your prep work well in advance. This can make even more complex recipes fun and fast.

Always make sure to use nylon and spatulas that are designed for the nonstick cookware that you?re cooking with. Metal or wooden utensils could scratch nonstick coat and cause flakes to fall from the pans. This is both unappetizing and unsafe.

Place unripe fruits in a plastic bag that is perforated right after you buy them. If you put them in the bag with holds the air will go through the bag, the air can circulate and assure that the gas is retained, helping the fruits retain their wonderful taste.

Being able to cook meals for yourself or your family is highly beneficial. After reading this article, you should be able to improve your cooking skills no matter what type of food you prefer to prepare. Fast food can be convenient sometimes, but there?s nothing better than a good meal made from your own kitchen.

Follow the Divas' trip to Rwanda with Nothing But Nets

Feb. 27, 2013, update:

The Divas were debriefed about their trip by the UN Refugee Agency, World Food Programme and UNDP (UN Development Program). They also took part in a field visit with UNDP, which is an agency that's mission is to improve quality of life. In Rwanda, UNDP is helping to empower women who have experienced great hardships. (PHOTOS)

Natalya and Alicia also visited the Hotel Des Milles Collines for dinner, which was made famous in the film "Hotel Rwanda." During the Rwandan genocide in 1994, more than 1,200 people took refuge inside the hotel.

Below is the latest blog from the Divas in Rwanda:

Every day we wake up feeling blessed to have the roles of being WWE Divas, but today was truly exceptional. Our day began with our partners with the United Nations Foundation?s?Nothing But Nets campaign escorting us to?UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) headquarters in Rwanda. UNHCR officials briefed us about how refugees are affected by malaria. Neimah Warsame, UNHCR Representative for Rwanda, was an amazing inspiration. She?s powerful and proactive in the community; seeing her and other Rwandan officials with various UN agencies showed us how passionate they are about helping refugees stay healthy and safe.

The hardships refugees face are unbelievable. There are about 65,000 refugees in Rwanda, most escaping fighting from Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. We couldn?t believe the very steep, uphill battle they face, even just to get to the safety of the camps in Rwanda.

Malaria is one of the refugees' biggest challenges. Only 60 percent of refugees in the country?s four camps have bed nets. That?s where the work of Nothing But Nets comes in. All of UNHCR?s goals for this year seem reachable, and we want to help them get there.

The most shocking thing we learned today is how many children die from malaria, a disease that?s completely preventable. A child used to die every 30 seconds from malaria ? now that figure is every 60 seconds. The work of Nothing But Nets has helped. But no child should die from a preventable disease. We want to make a real difference. Stay tuned to WWE.com to follow our journey through Rwanda.

The WWE Universe can help! It just takes $10 to send a life-saving mosquito net and save someone's life.

Feb. 26, 2013, update:

After a more than 20-hour journey, the Divas have arrived safely in Kigali, Rwanda, to begin their goodwill campaign to help fight malaria!

Alicia Fox and Natalya will pass out mosquito nets to refugees in Rwanda as part of WWE's alliance with the United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign to help raise awareness and funds to fight malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. (MORE INFO)

Clear promises Leap Motion support in Mac app, offers a glimpse of what's to come

We've seen some big Leap Motion deals announced, and some fairly impressive demos, but we haven't yet heard of many big-name apps that will support the gesture control technology. While not the biggest around, Realmac has today confirmed that the Mac version of its Clear to-do app -- itself noted for its novel interface -- will indeed support the motion controller "later this year." Details are light beyond that, but the company's offered a peek at what you can expect in the brief video after the break.

Dot Earth Blog: A Fresh Look at China's Long March on Energy and CO2

The Rhodium Group consulting firm has released a ?report card? on China?s energy trends and policies that describes the country?s intensifying efforts to increase the proportion of renewable sources like wind and hydroelectric dams and boost the efficiency of coal use (essentially the metric called ?greenhouse gas intensity? by President George W. Bush). The blunting upward trajectory in the graph above reflects progress, but a long path ahead.

The report is directly related to yesterday?s post laying out the view of the country?s leadership, as articulated by climate strategist Zou Ji, on the need to balance China?s response to global warming with its need to sustain economic advancement. The author of the report card, Trevor Houser, a former senior State Department adviser on international energy issues, told me he sees reasonable alignment between China?s goals for the economy and emissions:

Zou Ji mentions the challenges an industrializing economy faces in reducing emissions. Yet investment and industrial production are running out of steam as an engine of Chinese economic growth. The economic rebalancing Beijing is trying to engineer is capable by itself of achieving the country?s energy-intensity and carbon-intensity reducing goals.

Here are the main points from his report:

China?s 12th Five Year Plan includes a bevy of energy targets Beijing hopes to achieve between 2011 and 2015. Late last week the country?s National Bureau of Statistics released full-year energy supply and demand data for 2012, providing an early indicator on how China is doing two years into the plan. We?ve combed through the numbers, done the math, and offer a report card on Beijing?s progress to date in achieving its big three energy ambitions.

Target 1: Reduce the Energy-Intensity of the Economy by 16%: A slow-down in overall economic growth and, more importantly, a slow-down in energy-intensive industrial production, took its toll on energy demand in China in 2012. Coal and power consumption grew by only 2.5% and 5.5% respectively, down from 9.7% and 11.9% in 2011. That dragged overall energy demand growth down to 3.9% ? the lowest level China?s seen in more than a decade. While bad news for bulk commodity markets, it?s good news for Chinese energy policymakers as the country is getting back on track after a year in which energy-intensity only declined by 1.9%.

Target 2: Increase Non-Fossil Energy to 11.4% of Total Supply: Though overall power demand growth fell in 2012, the share of Chinese electricity generated from renewables increased from 15.7% to 19.4% thanks to a recovery in hydro and increased wind generation. Renewable and nuclear power combined accounted for 94% of all electricity generation growth in China in 2012. And preliminary estimates suggest the share of total energy supply from non-fossil sources increase from 8% to 9.9%. That puts Beijing in striking range of achieving its 11.4% target by 2015, though the big gains in 2012 will be tough to replicate this year.

Target 3: Cut the Carbon-Intensity of GDP by 17%: Slower energy demand growth combined with increased non-fossil energy supply curbed Chinese emissions growth in 2012. We estimate CO2 emissions rose by 3.2%, down from 9.3% year-on-year growth in 2011. That means the carbon-intensity of the Chinese economy declined by 4.3% ? a welcome improvement over 2011 when it remained unchanged. But the carbon-intensity of Chinese GDP will need to fall even faster ? by 4.6% a year between now and 2015 ? to meet Beijing?s 12th Five Year Plan commitment.

Colo. kids stranded at school overnight by snow

DENVER (AP) ? A snowstorm moving across the Midwest forced about 60 students to spend the night at their Colorado school when a state highway was closed due to dangerous conditions that left some drivers stranded in their cars, as winter weather continued to cause problems for a wide swath of the country.

Tens of thousands remained without power in Michigan, while adverse conditions continued to disrupt flights at Chicago's O'Hare Airport. In eastern Wisconsin, hundreds of vehicles were stranded or ended up in crashes as a winter storm made travel dangerous. And in Kansas, the latest snowstorm to hit the state was being blamed for six deaths.

According to the air traffic tracking website FlightAware.com, about 100 flights in and out of Chicago's airports have been canceled for Wednesday. Flights into O'Hare International Airport are being delayed an average of about an hour.

On the plains in the eastern half of Colorado, wind and snow created whiteout conditions Tuesday afternoon just as buses began taking students home from the Miami-Yoder school district school about 40 miles east of Colorado Springs. The buses turned back to the school and about 60 students, ranging from preschoolers to 12th graders, watched movies, played basketball, ate concession-stand pizza and talked to their parents before bedtime.

The older kids slept on wrestling and gym mats covered with coats, while the younger ones curled up on preschool napping mats, Principal Sharon Webb said.

The school is a large version of a one-room schoolhouse. The students all know each other, and many are related, which Webb said gave it the feel of a sleepover. She said parents were understanding.

"When you live out here in this wide-open country, you know they're where it's the safest," she said of the school.

Daylight showed how powerful the wind had been. Outside, there were drifts up to 4 feet high, but the grass was still visible on the football field.

The blowing snow also temporarily closed a 150-mile stretch of Interstate 70 from just outside Denver to the Kansas line, along with other smaller highways in eastern Colorado, including the one leading to the school. Deputies in surrounding El Paso County responded to about 40 calls for help from stranded drivers or reports of vehicles off the road that might still have people inside. No injuries were reported.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback said Wednesday the latest winter storm to hit his state caused six deaths.

The governor said two people died in traffic crashes, two siblings died from carbon monoxide poisoning in Kansas City, Kan., a woman died in southwest Kansas while shoveling snow, and another Kansas City resident was killed while walking in the snow.

The storms that crossed Kansas last Thursday and again this week dropped more than 2 feet of snow in some places and knocked out power to thousands of customers, mostly in eastern counties.

In Michigan, utilities said Wednesday roughly 50,600 homes and businesses lost electrical service after a storm that hit the state starting Tuesday knocked down power lines and tree branches.

Detroit-based DTE Energy Co. said about 40,000 of its customers were without power in the morning, and that Washtenaw County was the hardest hit.

Consumers Energy reported about 10,600 of its customers were without power in Wednesday afternoon. The subsidiary of Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp. said those outages include about 2,624 customers in Jackson County and 2,086 in Calhoun County.

The utilities said crews would work around the clock to restore power.

The National Weather Service said 9 inches of snow were reported in Muskegon, Mich., as of Wednesday morning. Authorities said weather might be a factor in crashes that killed motorists in Sanilac and Monroe counties.

In Wisconsin, there were more than 340 stranded vehicles and crashes in Milwaukee, Kenosha, Ozaukee and Washington counties after heavy snowfall that started Tuesday and continued into Wednesday.

The storm dumped 14 inches in Sheboygan County, where sheriff's Lt. Mark Rupnik said they've had at least 100 calls for stranded vehicles, vehicles in ditches or accidents. He said the main highways were drivable as of Wednesday afternoon but expected the secondary roads to be a problem for the next day.

Several area school districts canceled classes Wednesday, and there were power outages in the Milwaukee area.

Elsewhere, authorities said no one was injured after a train collided with a car that was stuck in snow on railroad tracks in Woodward, Okla., where at least 15 inches of snow fell.

The car's driver tried to drive over the train tracks Wednesday morning but became trapped on the snow-covered road, Oklahoma City television station KWTV reported.

Authorities say the driver was able to exit the car safely but couldn't push the vehicle from the tracks before the train smashed into it. The car was totaled in the collision.

Scientist at Work Blog: Getting to the Bottom of It All

Michael Becker, a doctoral student at McGill University, was a scientific diver on an expedition to Lake Untersee in Antarctica.

If you?re going where there?s no air to breathe, you better be organized.

Any kind of underwater diving involves process for that very reason. There?s the early-morning wake-up, the weather check, the gear check (masks, fins, regulators ? check). And then there?s the dive site approach ? whether you?re walking in from the shore or taking a boat to some far forgotten reef.

Diving Lake Untersee is just like that ? except in Antarctica we get to our dive site by snowmobile. ?And Untersee ratchets up the workload because it?s remote, technical and cold.

To even get into the lake is a feat of accomplishment and a trick of clever engineering. Just the thought of trying to chip a dive hole through 10-foot thick lake ice could give you tendinitis long before you get your feet wet.

During the early days of Antarctic diving in the late-1970s, the expedition leader Dale Andersen and a few clever people working in the Dry Valley region of Antarctica came up with an ingenious way of getting through the ice. They modified an industrial-strength steam cleaner to circulate boiling hot liquid through a closed-circuit piece of copper tubing. All a would-be diver had to do was place the tubing inside a small hole drilled in the ice and wait for magic to happen as the hole slowly formed over two days.

But even when the hole is melted there?s still a lot to do before getting into the water.

Dive Days

We start with a hearty breakfast of dehydrated granola ? a meal that I hope to never see again. After breakfast, the diver gets ready by sorting the gear and putting on the dry suit while the first tender drives out by snowmobile to chip out any refrozen ice from the dive hole.

The second snowmobile carries the other dive tender and the diver (already in their dry suit) to the hole. The diver sits on the ice platform and is dressed with weights, tank, gloves, and is tied in to the all-important safety line.

This line is the life tether. It is fed out and taken in as needed. That way the surface assistants have a sense of how far away the diver is, and the diver knows where to return. In the early days, sequences of line pulls would be used to communicate simple commands like an early Morse code for dive messages. Nowadays, the dive line connects a surface communication box to the diver?s facemask. Diver and tender are easily able to grumble back and forth to each other with all the benefits of modern technology.

Once the diver?s mask is on they slide in, do the dive, come back to the hole and are yanked out. If the diver still has a pulse there is applause all around and we go back to celebrate with a dinner of dehydrated food.

Safety is paramount here and there is no margin of error. The nearest recompression chamber for a dive injury is 2,000 miles away in Cape Town. There are no helicopters for rescue and any serious injury or accident could mean death.

We follow all this protocol and process in pursuit of one thing ? studying microbial communities locked away from human history.

The Science Down There

Dale and I have done a number of dives to collect data and samples on the conical stromatolites found at the bottom of Lake Untersee. ?Dale has surfaced several times with sediment cores of the lake?s bottom. These cores tell us about the history of the lake and its resident organisms. By looking at cross-sections of the cores, we can see that the microbial communities grow over the years in layers known as laminations. These laminae show us a chronosequence of events, alternating between mineral deposition and organic layer growth. These mineral deposits must come from somewhere as the lake surface is covered in ice. It?s thought that the occasional influx of silt from nearby glaciers provides the sediment that the cyanobacteria then recolonize.

But there?s more than just grabbing a sample and returning to the surface ? the lake environment needs to be described in precise detail.

These cyanobacteria are photosynthetic and dependent on light to create their energy. One of my dives was spent swimming transects back and forth directly underneath the 10-foot ice ceiling holding a light meter. This gives us an idea of the amount of energy that is available for photosynthesis beneath the lake. The ice cover isn?t completely uniform; there are dark areas intermingled with sections of bright windows. Also, since light drops off with depth, not all life within the lake is receiving the same amount of energy.

It?s not just these cyanobacterial mats that thrive in Lake Untersee.

There is a diverse world of bacteria and viruses that inhabit their own unique sections of the water column all the way from the lake surface to over 500 feet below. These areas are far beyond our range capacity as scientific divers, and so we must rely on a different technique to sample these distant creatures.

Our two Russian scientists, Vladimir Akimov?and?Valery Galchenko from the Winogradsky Institute of Microbiology,?are microbiologists that specialize in microbial life in extreme environments. Their work has taken them from remote regions of Yakutia, Russia, studying heat-loving extremophiles, to the even more remote Lake Untersee to study the isolated bacteria inhabiting this lake.

Different communities of bacteria thrive according to the changing abiotic conditions, as you get deeper in the lake?s water column. ?These environments are mapped out by lowering sensors to measure conductivity, temperature, and depth, or CTD, from the lake?s surface down to around 330 feet ? our maximum sample depth.

Vladimir and Valery then lower their sampler to different points within the water column and capture about a gallon of water. These samples are brought back to camp, and the two spend hour after waking hour filtering the water to concentrate samples of both bacteria and viruses. There?s no human health concern with these viruses ? they are specific to the bacteria in the lake, and must exist in some sort of equilibrium with the lake life.

One of the areas that Vladimir and Valery are particularly interested is a section of the lake at 256 feet. At this depth, the lake chemistry changes quite a bit ? it becomes anoxic, meaning without oxygen. The organisms that thrive in this section have no need for oxygen in their metabolic processes. They use sulfur instead.

From a practical perspective, that means the samples reek. Rich in hydrogen sulfide, they smell like sour, rotten eggs. But by studying this transition from the clear, oxygen-rich water above to the dark, oxygen-poor water below we can get a sense of the two different worlds experienced by bacteria within the same lake.

What we bring up from the depths of Lake Untersee is only the beginning of a long scientific process. All these samples must be carried back to the civilized world, processed and analyzed over the next several months. Only then we will be able to more fully understand the ecosystem of Lake Untersee, and only then will we fully understand the significance of what we?re seeing.

And that?s what makes all this time, effort, and risk worth it. Diving Untersee has been an incredible experience, but without the questions driving us forward, it would be a lot to gamble for a good view.

Some Common House Painting Questions | Home Improvement ...

Before choosing the house painting company that?s best for you, you need to make sure that the painters you hire are reliable. Before making any decisions regarding the best painter that is right for you, you must make sure that the painting company is reliable and reputable.Make sure you screen multiple painters before hiring and check all of their professional references to find the best contractor. It is always a good sign when a house painting company hires their own employees rather than subbing out their work to other contractors.

Always be sure to see if your contractor is licensed and make sure the painters working on your home have experience and are skilled workers. It is a good idea to check and see if there are any outstanding complaints online about the contractor you are considering hiring. If you follow these steps and use your common sense you will be closer to getting a trustworthy house painting company to work on your home, said some painters Christchurch.

A variety of different factors will contribute to the time it takes to complete your house painting project. The time it takes to paint an interior is different than the amount of time it takes to paint the exterior. Setbacks in the schedule can occur based on the weather during your particular project so it is important to also consider things like humidity, heat and rain that can affect your project. The time it takes to finish the project can also be affected by the square footage and height of the building which may require crews to take extra safety precautions and extra ladder movements which can add to the time. To insure that your needs and deadlines are met by the house painting company you want, make sure you schedule your project weeks or even months in advance.

Every house we paint is totally different than the last as each homeowner has different preferences making no two jobs the same. The cost of painting your home depends on a variety of factors when calculating the exact price. Some of the factors that influence pricing are the experience of the Phoenix painters on the job, the square footage of the house, the quality of the paint being used and whether or not you are getting the interior or exterior of the house painted. These are just a few of the many considerations that we use when calculating a price to paint your house.

Be very cautious of any contractor looking to do your painting for very cheap. It?s common that these low priced painting contractors will leave you with a disappointing paint job and they will use illegal workers and low quality paint.Spend the extra money to get your paint job done right the first time and you will be glad you did. Eclipse Painting is dedicated to giving you the highest quality standards in craftsmanship, service and product. One can also refer to http://www.mrcarpetcleaner.co.nz/ for the related services.

Bloomberg's Super PAC Anti-Gun Ad Makes Waves in Election

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has lent his voice and money to have some say in which Democrat replaces former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., the son of civil rights icon Jesse Jackson, in today's special election.

The front-runners in today's primary in Illinois 2nd District are Robin Kelly, a former state representative, and former Rep. Debbie Halvorson. Kelly recently snapped up Bloomberg's endorsement and financial backing through his super PAC Independence USA. Bloomberg donated close to $10 million to the super PAC last year, according to OpenSecrets.org. Jackson, who pleaded guilty last week in a D.C. federal court to one felony fraud count related to improper use of campaign funds, won re-election last November but resigned, citing health and the investigation into his campaign finances as reasons.

Halvorson is the only white candidate in the majority African-American district, which includes Chicago's South Side. Several Democrats initially stepped up to run for the seat following Jackson's resignation, but many withdrew and threw their support to the current candidates.

Chicago's epidemic of gun violence has been a top issue in the campaign. Ads have sought to paint Halvorson, who challenged Jackson in a 2012 Democratic primary for his congressional seat, in a negative light. An ad made by Independence USA, the super PAC created by Bloomberg, an independent, has attacked Halvorson for her support of gun rights.

"Debbie Halvorson, when it comes to preventing gun violence, she gets an F," the ad says. The ad further warns to "watch out" for Halvorson, saying she is against banning deadly assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips, and that she also co-sponsored a bill to allow felons to take "loaded, hidden guns across state lines."

"If you can tell me that banning another gun will go after the criminals, I'd be all for it," Halvorson told The Hill Monday. "I'd be for anything that stopped the killing and gets guns out of the hands of criminals, but it won't work. [Chicago's] Cook County has had an assault weapons ban since 1993, and they have the highest murder rate in the country." Halvorson was one of the few Democrats endorsed by the National Rifle Association in 2010.

A spokesman for Halvorson's campaign said the ad had actually backfired on the super PAC.

"Initially, it was a shell shock," said Sean Howard, a spokesman for Halvorson's campaign. "But we had 70 African-American ministers call for Bloomberg to have the ad removed. ? These ministers find it distasteful and racist, and thought its tone was dangerous and appalling."

But the ad stayed. A representative from Independence USA said the ad expressed Bloomberg's staunch support for Kelly. "The mayor has been clear for his entire time in office. He wants commonsense reforms that keep guns out of hands of criminals," said Stefan Friedman, a spokesman for Independence USA. "There is no doubt there has been a surge of gun violence around Chicago. Robin Kelly has been aggressively pushing for gun reform measures - we believe this is the right way to go."

Halvorson, however, remains confident, said Howard. "Given that we have a dangerous snowstorm here today, turnout will be dangerously low," Howard said. "[Debbie] was phone banking all last night. ? We are cautiously optimistic."

(AP) ? Syrian rebels battled government troops near a landmark 12th century mosque in the northern city of Aleppo on Tuesday, while fierce clashes raged around a police academy west of the city, activists said.

The fighting near the Umayyad Mosque in the walled Old City threatened to further damage the historic structure, part of which was burned during clashes last year.

Since July 2012, government forces and rebels seeking to topple President Bashar Assad have been battling over Aleppo, the country's largest city and a major prize in the civil war. While rebels have gradually expanded the amount of turf under their control, seven months of street fighting, airstrikes and shelling have left much of the city, considered one of Syria's most beautiful, in ruins.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported intense clashes with heavy gunfire and explosions near the mosque. Syria's state news agency said "terrorists" had detonated explosives near the building's south wall, causing "material damages."

Assad's regime refers to the opposition as "terrorists."

The mosque, also known as the Great Mosque of Aleppo, sits near a medieval covered market in the Old City, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The mosque was heavily damaged in October, 2012, just weeks after a fire gutted the market.

Syria's nearly 2-year-old civil war has left its mark on other gems of the country's rich archaeological and cultural heritage.

At least five of Syria's six World Heritage sites have been damaged in the fighting, according to UNESCO, the U.N.'s cultural agency. Looters have broken into one of the world's best-preserved Crusader castles, Crac des Chevaliers, and ruins in the ancient city of Palmyra have been damaged.

Both rebels and regime forces have turned some of Syria's significant historic sites into bases, including citadels and Turkish bath houses, while thieves have stolen artifacts from archaeological excavations and, to a lesser extent, museums.

To the west of Aleppo, activists reported fresh fighting Tuesday near the police academy that has become a key government military installation.

The Observatory said the two sides were shelling each other's positions while the government launched airstrikes in the area.

Video posted online in recent days shows rebel groups firing homemade rockets and mortars at the academy and blasting it with captured tanks. The videos appeared genuine and corresponded with other Associated Press reporting.

The Observatory said the dead in the last two days of fighting in the area included 26 rebel fighters, 40 soldiers and five pro-government militiamen.

The police academy, which activists say the government has turned into a military base, has recently emerged as a new front in the battle for Aleppo. Losing the facility would hinder the regime's ability to shell opposition areas and support its troops inside the city.

An Aleppo activist who goes by the name Abu al-Hassan said via Skype that rebels coming from Idlib province to the west are now trying to clear the army from residential areas near the academy before they attack it.

"Yesterday and today they have been trying to go forward but there are lots of shelling and airstrikes," he said.

The fighting has largely destroyed Aleppo and caused humanitarian conditions for the city's remaining civilians to plummet.

On Tuesday, Human Rights Watch said more than 141 people, including 71 children, had been killed in at least four missile strikes by the Syrian government in and near the city of Aleppo last week. The New York-based group said the strikes hit residential areas and called them an "escalation of unlawful attacks against Syria's civilian population."

A Human Rights Watch researcher who visited the sites said up to 20 buildings were destroyed in each area hit by a missile. There were no signs of any military targets in the residential districts, located in rebel-held parts of Aleppo and its northern countryside, said Ole Solvang, the researcher.

"The extent of the damage from a single strike, the lack of (military) aircraft in the area at the time, and reports of ballistic missiles being launched from a military base near Damascus overwhelmingly suggest that government forces struck these areas with ballistic missiles," HRW said in its report.

It added that the Aleppo neighborhoods hit were Jabal Badro, Tariq al-Bab and Ard al-Hamra. The fourth strike documented by the group was in Tel Rifat, north of the city.

UNICEF said in a statement that it is "appalled" by the deaths of children, and called on all parties in the conflict to "ensure that civilians ? and children especially ? are protected, at all times."

Syria has never acknowledged the strikes, and portrays the conflict as a foreign conspiracy carried out by "terrorists" to weaken the country.

The missile attacks have outraged the leaders of Syria's exiled opposition who have accused their Western backers of indifference to the suffering of civilians caught up in the conflict.

Also Tuesday, the Observatory said the death toll in a car bomb attack in Damascus had risen to eight. All were regime security officers, it said.

The blast late Monday struck a security checkpoint in the neighborhood of Qaboun, less than a kilometer (mile) from Abbasid Square, northeast of downtown. It was followed by several other smaller blasts thought to be mortar shells landing in various districts of the capital.

The explosions and subsequent gunfire caused panic among residents who hid in their apartments.

Syria's state news agency said the blast was caused by a suicide car bomber and caused an unspecified number of casualties.

The U.N. says some 70,000 have been killed since Syria's conflict began in March 2011.

Suicide bomber attacks Afghan army bus; 7 wounded

(AP) ? A man wearing a black overcoat and carrying an umbrella as a shelter against the heavy snow crossed a street in the Afghan capital early Wednesday morning toward an idling bus filled with Afghan soldiers, where he laid down and wiggled underneath. Then he exploded, engulfing the undercarriage of the bus in flames.

The suicide bomber killed himself and wounded at least seven people ? six soldiers and one civilian, the Kabul police chief's office said. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message to The Associated Press.

Though no deaths were reported, the attack ? the second attempted strike in the capital this week ? was a reminder of the Taliban insurgency's ability to hit the Afghan government even with about 100,000 international troops helping secure the country.

The Afghan government uses buses to ferry soldiers, police and office workers into the center of the city for work every day. These vehicles, which run regular routes, have been a common target for insurgents.

A handful of soldiers were about to board the bus when the attacker slid underneath and detonated his vest, said Ahmad Shakib, who saw the attack unfold as he waited across the street.

Shakib said the attacker did not rush but moved purposefully across the snowy street. Shakib thought when the man started to push himself under the bus that maybe he was a driver's assistant trying to fix something.

"I thought to myself, 'What is this crazy man doing?' And then there was a blast and flames,'" Shakib said.

"It was a very loud explosion. I still cannot really hear," he added.

The owner of a bakery nearby said that six people who were waiting outside his shop to buy bread were also wounded. The windows of Mirza Khan's bakery also shattered.

The attack comes three days after a would-be car bomber was shot dead by police in downtown Kabul. That assailant was driving a vehicle packed with explosives and officials said he appeared to be targeting an intelligence agency office nearby.

Linking insulin to learning: Insulin-like molecules play critical role in learning and memory

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Though it's most often associated with disorders like diabetes, Harvard researchers have shown how the signaling pathway of insulin and insulin-like peptides plays another critical role in the body -- helping to regulate learning and memory.

In addition to showing that the insulin-like peptides play a critical role in regulating the activity of neurons involved in learning and memory, a team of researchers led by Yun Zhang, Associate Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, show that the interaction between the molecules can fine-tune how, or even if, learning takes place. Their work is described in a February 6 paper in Neuron.

"People think of insulin and diabetes, but many metabolic syndromes are associated with some types of cognitive defects and behavioral disorders, like depression or dementia," Zhang said. "That suggests that insulin and insulin-like peptides may play an important role in neural function, but it's been very difficult to nail down the underlying mechanism, because these peptides do not have to function through synapses that connect different neurons in the brain"

To get at that mechanism, Zhang and colleagues turned to an organism whose genome and nervous system are well described and highly accessible by genetics -- C. elegans.

Using genetic tools, researchers altered the small, transparent worms by removing their ability to create individual insulin-like compounds. These new "mutant" worms were then tested to see whether they would learn to avoid eating a particular type of bacteria that is known to infect the worms. Tests showed that while some worms did learn to steer clear of the bacteria, others didn't -- suggesting that removing a specific insulin-like compound halted the worms' ability to learn.

Researchers were surprised to find, however, that it wasn't just removing the molecules that could make the animals lose the ability to learn -- some peptide was found to inhibit learning.

"We hadn't predicted that we would find both positive and negative regulators from these peptides," Zhang said. "Why does the animal need this bidirectional regulation of learning? One possibility is that learning depends on context. There are certain things you want to learn -- for example, the worms in these experiments wanted to learn that they shouldn't eat this type of infectious bacteria. That's a positive regulation of the learning. But if they needed to eat, even if it is a bad food, to survive, they would need a way to suppress this type of learning."

Even more surprising for Zhang and her colleagues was evidence that the various insulin-like molecules could regulate each other.

"Many animals, including the humans, have multiple insulin-like molecules and it appears that these molecules can act like a network," she said. "Each of them may play a slightly different role in the nervous system, and they function together to coordinate the signaling related to learning and memory. By changing the way the molecules interact, the brain can fine tune learning in a host of different ways."

Going forward, Zhang said she hopes to characterize more of the insulin-like peptides as a way of better understanding how the various molecules interact, and how they act on the neural circuits for learning and memory.

Understanding how such pathways work could one day help in the development of treatment for a host of cognitive disorders, including dementia.

"The signaling pathways for insulin and insulin-like peptides are highly conserved in mammals, including the humans," Zhang said. "There is even some preliminary evidence that insulin treatment, in some cases, can improve cognitive function. That's one reason we believe that if we understand this mechanism, it will help us better understand how insulin pathways are working in the human brain."

Maks isn't 'Dancing With the Stars' in season 16

D Dipasupil / Getty Images

Maksim Chmerkovskiy is taking season 16 of "Dancing" off.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

When "Dancing With the Stars" unveiled its season 16 lineup Tuesday morning, one very popular pro was not included: ballroom bad boy Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

Rumors had surfaced in the days prior that Maks wouldn't be participating in the show this upcoming season, and Tuesday, he confirmed the news to TODAY.com.

"I just want to set the record straight to all of my amazing fans that I will unfortunately not be returning for this season of 'Dancing With the Stars,' " he said in a statement. "I?ve been a pro dancer on the show for about seven years now and am eager to explore other opportunities that have been made possible because of 'Dancing With the Stars.' I'm going to take this time to?dive into producing and acting, while fulfilling my sponsorship obligations. ?

"A big thank you to all of my fans for your never-ending support. I also want to thank the entire cast and production of 'Dancing With the Stars.' "

"We frequently rotate the professional dancers, so it is not unusual for them to rest a cycle,? ABC said of Maks taking a break. "We appreciate each of our dancer's dedication to the show, so this is a very difficult decision. Anna (Trebunskaya), Chelsie (Hightower), Maks and Louis (Van Amstel) continue to be a part of the?'Dancing With the Stars'?family."

This isn't the first time the passionate dancer, who joined "DWTS" in season two, has taken time off from the show. He took season six off after finishing second with Mel B. in season five.

Maks, who has always stood up for his partners on the show when he felt they were unfairly critiqued, has famously sparred with judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba for several seasons. In season 13, he even told head judge Len during a critique of partner Hope Solo that he should retire, and cursed Carrie Ann backstage to reporters.

Though the Ukranian pro is taking time off to pursue other interests, the ballroom won't be Chmerkovskiy free. Maks' little brother, Val, is returning for his fourth season, and is paired with teen Disney star Zendaya.

"Dancing With the Stars" kicks off on March 18 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
