A look at some of the top smoking nations

Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev declared war on tobacco Tuesday, calling for a ban on tobacco advertising, an end to smoking in public and a rise in the price of a pack. Russia's smoking rates are among the world's highest, led by Kiribati where 57 percent of the adult population lights up. Here's a look at the ways some other top smoking nations are trying to bring down the number of smokers:

GREECE

Percentage of adults who smoke: 52

Marlboro pack costs $4.80

Since 2009, most tobacco advertising is banned except in places where cigarettes are sold, and smoking is not allowed in public spaces. The smoking ban is widely ignored, and most bars still have ashtrays on tables.

RUSSIA

Percentage of adults who smoke: 42

Marlboro pack costs $2

Tobacco advertising is limited to marketing drives at bars and printed ads that carry health warnings. Smoking is prohibited on trains, airplanes and some other public places, but is allowed at most bars and clubs. Many cafes and restaurants have non-smoking areas.

ALBANIA

Percentage of adults who smoke: 40

Marlboro pack costs $2.20

Tobacco advertising is banned in Albania, and the law prohibits smoking in bars, offices and other places where people gather, but the rules are sometimes flouted.

BULGARIA

Percentage of adults who smoke: 37

Marlboro pack costs $3.50

A program introduced last year to limit tobacco advertising is commonly ignored, with celebrities commonly appearing on billboard ads. A full ban on smoking in indoor public spaces was imposed in June, meeting fierce opposition from restaurant owners who say they're losing up to 50 percent of their business.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Percentage of adults who smoke: 37

Marlboro pack costs $4

Advertising tobacco products is broadly banned except at points of sale. Smoking is banned in public places including train stations, but is allowed in bars and restaurants at the owners' discretion.

CoreNet Special Report: Workplace Mobility Trends | Commercial ...

October 17, 2012

Michael Ratliff, Associate Editor

The ability to work remotely should not just be viewed as an employee amenity. The practice also helps corporations operate a leaner portfolio and can even boost worker productivity. But mobility is often met with hesitance from seasoned employees and straight up resistance from middle management. Last week at the CoreNet Global Summit in Orlando, a panel of corporate real estate leaders met to discuss how to take these push-backs head on and succeed.

Shawn Rush, associate principal at international architecture firm Callison, spoke on two case studies involving two different mobility programs. The first client that Rush discussed was a Software company based in San Jose that had some employees that were just a bit too mobile.

?What do you do when you have a highly sought after digital workforce demographic that is so mobile that you struggle bringing them back into the office,? Rush said, describing the assignment that called for a renovation of space that housed both executive and software teams.

His solution was to provide a transparent look into the work process. The software teams worked in what Rush described as a ?swarm pattern,? where groups of six to eight people assembled to simultaneously work on a project. The executives wanted this practice to be visible to building visitors as potential and active investors walked through. The space that housed the software ?swarms? was completely malleable on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, depending on the given needs of a particular project.

The second mobile case study that Rush discussed was that for a global food services company in Dallas. His particular assignment involved getting the marketing/sales teams and general administration into the building with the domestic president and his staff (who were not mobile at all). Rush pointed out that the real task of a mobility program is to figure out how to best align corporate real estate, information technology and human resources departments.

?One thing that we did learn was that remote team players often rated their managers high than those that sat within 10 to 20 feet,? he added.

One of the most prevalent hindrances to a mobility program is fear, said Tony Gill, strategic project lead, corporate real estate at Canadian Tire (a well-known national brand described as a hybrid between Home Depot and Wal-Mart).

?Prepare for push backs because they are coming,? Gill said. ?Managers have the tendency to think that they need to have employees within line of site at any time or else the company is going to collapse.?

Corporate real estate at Canadian Tire assumed the ownership of the mobility initiative in 2009. The current project is branded as ?The Reinvention?. Gill, who has also worked on mobility programs on the banking/financial institution side of commercial real estate, maintains that executive sponsorship is absolutely imperative for a program to overcome resistance.

?Once you get things moving at the top, the initiative has a tendency of flowing down from there,? Gill added.

After getting an all-systems go from the bigwigs, Gill?s team brought in some advisors from the Silicon Valley as the information technology department was the second stop after real estate in the mobility initiative. Human resources was the third group to join in the program, taking on the task of creating the ?rules of engagement?. When it comes to overcoming the inevitable push-back, Gill recommends face to face interaction.

?It is important to be connected to the people on the ground,? he said. ?We regularly walk the floors and speak with the employees. Lunch and learn, if you will. We put our faces right out there?win over the managers and appoint program representatives.?

Sharon Loveland, facilities development manager at Starbucks Coffee Co., was the next panelist to receive the floor. Loveland discussed the mobility effort at the company?s Seattle headquarters, a 1 million-square-foot office home to 4,000 people that is currently 98 percent occupied. The mobility efforts coincide with a major remodeling that will take down the cube size from 8? x 8? to 6? x 6? with low or no panels. Collaboration space will also be added. To allow for the renovation and to get the occupancy down to a more manageable level, Starbucks is asking groups of 150 to 200 at a time to go mobile for two to four weeks.

?We are trying to tell them ?don?t go away for four weeks,?? Loveland said. ??You can become a mobile campus worker?go work in a Starbucks store.??

The initiative, a result of the company?s Flexible Work Standards that were implemented in January 2011, was established by human resources rather than corporate real estate. As of early October, no one has given up an assigned workstation as a result of telecommuting, so no net real estate has been reduced.

?It hasn?t gone very far,? Loveland added. ?It was left up to individual departments and mangers to do this on their own, and each business unit leader has a right to say yes or no.?

Loveland believes that the company needs to develop a method to track how many partners are participating in the work share. The IT department is currently working on brining cloud solutions and laptop-enabled workforce to the table, which should help things ramp up in the near future.

?It seems that an important lesson is that there needs to be consistency among departments initiating their own mobile policy,? Loveland said.

God dammit! I love this rp so much already!! Alrighty, I just wanted to clear this up. ( Even though no one asked ^.^ ) Period 5 ( Right after lunch ) Is gym for all the students. The school has 6 gym teachers and everyone in the school takes gym together. ( There is a gym uniform too! ) Since there are 6 gym teachers, the school is split into 6 groups, 3 boy groups and 3 girls groups. It's outside on nice days, and inside on crappy days. All of the girl characters in this rp, ( Except for the counselor ) will be in girls group 1 together. All of the boy characters in this rp will be in boys group 1 together. ( Along with some NPC's of course ) And the groups are all in separate parts of the field. The girls and boys in the same group do the same activity just not really together.

Tips for Selecting Folding Patio Doors that Can - My Home Sweet ...

For many homeowners patio doors can give more beauty to a home externally and internally. The extraordinary elegance can be observed when you open the interior living room of your house to merge with the garden or your pool outside. One of the innovative products introduced by manufacturers that create a positive impression to the public is the folding patio door. Some people may consider this as a luxurious item and is quiet pricey; however, this is available in variety and it can be challenging to find the right folding door for you which is offered at reasonable price.

Here are helpful tips that you can follow to select the right folding patio doors.

  • Consider How Much You Can Afford

Before you shop for a folding patio door for your home, decide first how much price range you can afford. You must also take a measurement for the opening where you will place the door. This is a very essential task as this will prevent problems like difficulty in closing the door properly. Choose the construction type you require whether hollow wood, composite materials or solid woods. Then consider the style and color you prefer for your door. Make sure the finishes will match with your house. When these preparations are done, you are now ready to go to the home improvement outlets to shop. When selecting a folding patio door you need to consider something presentable, affordable and of high quality.

  • Check the Appearance And Style

The appearance and style of your folding patio door must merge with the kind of house you have. This door system can be one factor that will change the entire ambiance of your home by simply improving its look. These doors can be made of different types of materials where you can select something that will not disturb your budget. Just make sure you have chosen the kind of material that will match your house.

  • Take into Account the Cost of the Doors

The cost of folding patio doors may differ depending on the style and type of materials it is made of. If you choose more security in your home many people claim that folding patio doors can be a good option. They are usually built with a strong frame which is made of aluminum and each of the pair is securely locked from the top as well as the bottom. The locking system is done by turning the key which is located in the vertical frame on its center. Additionally, you will not find a key hole outside the door which is another asset of safety. The cost sometimes is not given attention by homeowners as they prefer something comfortable and secure.

  • Evaluate of they Have Good Quality

When choosing a folding patio door for your house you must not sacrifice the quality for its cost. Since there are a lot of options that you can take to obtain one, make sure that they are durable and are manufactured from high quality materials. One of the important things that you have to check on your folding door is the track that it runs to. Make sure that the door you have chosen can be opened and closed smoothly. If you want a high quality door, then you must purchase it in a reputable manufacturer and when installing make sure to hire a professional.

You have a lot of option when purchasing a folding patio door. A lot of people choose glass doors because they allow a better view for the interior and exterior of the house. They will also add more attraction when it is open. There are varieties of styles like those that are made of full glass, others have sections which are glass and partly made of wood while some are made half wood and half glass. Choosing a folding door depends mainly on your personal preferences.

Why You Shouldn't Build A Business On An API Call | TechCrunch

Editor?s note:?Joseph Puopolo is an entrepreneur and startup founder of Printchomp?who blogs on a variety of topics, including green initiatives, technology and marketing.

I am constantly amazed by the number of startups that build applications and take a huge business risk by building their company on an API call. Countless apps, particularly social apps, have popped up through the last 24 months that have taken data from other systems and re-displayed it in their systems. While there is widespread usage of APIs (and not for a moment am I suggesting that people not use them at all), I just think that start-up founders consistently underplay the business risk.

The risk is clear, if the data dries up so does your business.?For all that have created apps based largely on API calls, consider what would happen if that information fire hose wasn?t there anymore. The companies who provide these APIs may not disappear, but it will definitely be a game-changer. The changes to Twitter?s API should serve as a warning sign and an important reminder. Countless third-party Twitter apps have found all their hard work rendered useless by the latest release of their 1.1 API, as the vital flow of data has come to a halt or slowed greatly. Some might blame Twitter and say how dare they shut down the fire hose to the community. I think a lot of responsibility needs to be placed on the developers who consciously build on an ecosystem they knowingly can?t control.

Two examples cited directly by?Michael Sippey?on the Twitter blog are Tweetbot and Echofon. In the words of Sippey, ?Nearly eighteen months ago, we gave developers guidance that they should not build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience. And to reiterate what I wrote in my last post, that guidance continues to apply today.? I am not here to parse the he said she said, just to offer a warning to startups building their business on an API.

If your startup could have its throat cut by a TOS (Terms of Service) change or API change, you shouldn?t just brush inherent risks to your company under the carpet. Moving beyond the risks to your company you should also consider what the true value you are providing to your users. In many cases (especially in the case of social), apps merely have a new UI on top of the information of Twitter or Facebook.

On the contrary, there is something amazing to be said for companies who build into the ecosystem and allow their functionality to be seamless across a broader group of applications. The best example that comes to mind is 37 Signals universe and the way they have built and integrated into countless other useful applications. They allow vital business information to flow freely flow between systems. ?The trouble I have with many other companies and apps that have emerged is their sole dependence on other ecosystems to drive data into their systems via an API.

Perhaps I have an old-fashioned view of the Internet when I propose the following.? Your application needs to be able to offer some additional value beyond what you can drive via an API call and the subsequent data derived from it. There are definitely edge cases for this statement, but there is an underlying problem in how people are approaching the creation of a new business. Create your own mechanism for your users to contribute data into your system and encourage them to be active users with their own accounts in your system. Your system needs to be able to able to stand on its own two legs. For many young startups, API calls have become a crutch in lieu of generating their own data.

Some soul searching needs to occur for a lot of young entrepreneurs who are trying to create something people will find interesting and use. Just because you can make an API call and slap a slightly new UI on it doesn?t make it a business.

The world?s most expensive cocktail will set you back $8,824

Salvatore Calabrese creates the world's most expensive cocktail. (YouTube)Famed cocktail bartender Salvatore Calabrese has broken the Guinness World Records mark for creating the most expensive cocktail in history.

"I'm not only going to make the most expensive cocktail in the world but surely the world's oldest cocktail," Calabrese says in a video documenting the eponymous "Salvatore's Legacy" at the Playboy Club London. He notes that the ingredients used have a combined age of more than 700 years: "730 years of history," he says. "Truly a liquid history in a glass."

For the rest of us, sipping the concoction will cost a hefty $8,824.

ShortList Magazine explains that the four ingredients used to make the cocktail are hundreds of years old: a 1778 Clos de Griffier vieux cognac, a 1770 Kummel liqueur, a circa 1860 Dubb orange Curacao and two dashes of Angostura bitters dating from around 1900.

Calabrese surpassed the previous record holder, a high-end Old Fashioned made by the Skyview Bar in Dubai and worth a reported $6,054.30.

ASUS' TAICHI convertible laptop hits the FCC

ASUS Tai Chi convertible laptop hits the FCC

If 2012 was the year of the Ultrabook, 2013's going to be remembered by the massive proliferation of laptop / tablet hybrids. One such convertible that's just been given full marks by the FCC is ASUS' TAICHI, an 11.6 or 13.3-inch unit that's packing an Ivy Bridge Core i7, 4GB RAM and, most notably, a display on both sides of its lid. While there's no official word from the company on a launch date, now that the government has given a thumbs up, it can't be too much further out. Plausibly, a rogue Amazon listing has pegged the 11.6-inch model as costing $1,300 and arriving on October 26th, alongside Windows 8.

E-commerce ? Cloudspotting Blog

ELECTRONIC COMMERCE, E-COMMERCE, E-COMM

E-commerce is the buying and selling of products or services over any electronic system for example the Internet, which incidentally is the most common system. This type of buying and selling is becoming increasingly popular throughout 2012 and is predicted to grow in 2013?along with?the process and? technology that supports it.

Currently the? ecommerce system employs technology such as: electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems. Typically, the use of the web is used during this process at some stage in the loop; however, as the trend for ecommerce grows we are seeing a move towards other technologies, to name a few: email, tablet devices and smart phones for facilitating ecommerce transactions.

As well as ecommerce constituting the sales aspect of a business, it also involves the sharing of data, which is necessary to carry out the sales transaction. As such, E-commerce can be interpreted as an umbrella term for several sub groups of online sales, some of these subgroups are:

?

E-tailing, in other words, businesses have ?virtual storefronts? on their Web sites, often with online catalogs, that are sometimes gathered into a ?marketplace? or?shopping centre arangement?arguably the two best examples of this type of ecommerce comes from Amazon and EBay.

Electronic Data Interchange often just abbreviated to EDI, is the exchange of data from one business to another. A cited example of this is: The Bergen Brunswig Drug Company. This is how Electronic Data Exchange works for them:

  1. To place an order to Bergen Brunswig, a pharmacist uses a bar code scanner to capture the Uniform Product Code.
  2. The pharmacist then enters the quantity desired into a keypad on the scanner
  3. Next, a microcomputer reads the information contained in the scanner and an electronic order is prepared for the pharmacist?s review.
  4. The order is sent via EDI to a distribution center where the order is analyzed and re-sequenced to match the product location in the distribution center.
  5. Bergen Brunswig also uses EDI for sending purchase orders to pharmaceutical manufacturers, receiving invoices, and handling charge backs.

MAKING E-COMMERCE A SUCCESS

There have been one or two recent articles from the likes of Econsultancy and others, on the characteristics that make some e-commerce sites more successful than others. At the top of that list, is search boxes, especially site search boxes! These little additions to a site have been demonstrated to directly affect and increase conversions ? that means more sales.

As noted in Econsultancy?s investigation in to successful ecommerce, ?an effective site search function on an e-commerce site has a number of potential benefits?. ?And really that shouldn?t be surprising. These days, we are all accustomed to finding the results we want not only in record speed, but with high accuracy as well, due to our familiarity with search engines like Google, as such, we now expect the same quality of results when we conduct any online search, whether through another search engine or indeed, an ecommerce website. But more than that, we expect to be able to make a search or query in the first place.

?

As such, the top tip for ecommerce success given in Econsultancy?s article is:

Once any search button is set up for a site, it comes down to good design as to how successful that search button will be. It needs to be positioned so that it is easy to find. It should also be labelled, this has two benefits, it makes the function of the button clear and it helped with making it easier to find. Similarly, research suggests it is better to keep search boxes separated from other boxes on the web page, and that they should be visible on every individual page of a site! There is nothing more frustrating than having to backtrack to a homepage every time you have a query. What this all boiled down to, is the second big tip for ecommerce success:

On your search button is where everyone can find it, the trick is to make it work best for the user. That means having an auto fill function on the search box, so options are presented as it is typed in to, this can help prompt user in to looking at something other than what they had intended. The search box should also be equipped with a function for narrowing searches, to help with recalling accurate search results, which all links back to our expectation of quick and accurate searches. So it is not enough to just have the button in the first place, hence, the third and final tip for successful ecommerce searching:

  • Make the Search Button Effective

?

So, with all this is mind, here is one Ecommerce site that is, on the whole, doing everything right, and was ranked 8/10 by The Wall. The Wall also notes that Ted Bakers ?market capitalization? is a rather impressive ?376.43m, and that should be evidence enough that getting your Ecommerce right is a worthwhile endeavour!

So, Tedbaker.com (as analyzed by The Wall)

Another highly regarded Ecommerce site from us here in the office is ASOS, which is site that is easy to navigate and browse, with good sliders. Another reasonably good ecommerce site is Ebuyer.

On the flip side, LowCostHolidays.com is one site we find to be pretty poor in its ecommerce practice, with continual errors and a lack of ?people friendly? explanation for one.

So far, all these Ecommerce sites have been relatively standard in their sales practices online. For a breath of fresh air perhaps, or maybe just for a change, have a look at this:

Humble Bundle, an extraordinary ecommerce site as reported by The Guardian.

Video: How to treat your child?s cold or flu

>>> this morning on "go healthy today," remedies for the flu. on average, adults catch a cold about two to three times a year. but for kids, it's a lot more than that. the pediatrician and spokesperson for the american academy of pediatrics . good to see you again.

>> thank you for having me.

>> so kids can catch up to ten colds a year?

>> sometimes even a few more. especially if they're around other children. that's why we teach kids to cover their cough, use a tissue when they blow their nose and throw it away. wash their hands frequently and in classrooms, make sure teachers are wiping and cleaning surfaces.

>> just to be clear, there's a difference between the cold and a flu?

>> there is. they're both caused be i viruses, but many cold viruses and there's several flu viruses. the best way to decrease your chance of getting either one is to get a flu vaccine and wash your hands frequently.

>> let's say your child gets home, sneezing, coughing, there are medications you don't want to give your kids.

>> right. so cold and cough medications are not recommended for children under age 2. and that's according to the american academy of pediatrics and the fda. between age 2 and 6, it's really best not to use them. and use them with caution and only when directed by your pediatrician because they haven't been shown to be effective and there may be unpleasant side effects .

>> they offer specific symptoms, specific relief. so the big thing we're worried about is overdosing, right?

>> exactly. and if you look at a multi-symptom cold medicine, often you'll find several ingredients. so the mistake i often see parents make, they'll give their child tylenol and an hour later give them a cold medicine that may also have it in there and they're double-dosing their child. you want to read the ingredients on the box and follow the direction.

>> and recently they changed the dose, haven't they?

>> it's used to reduce a fever. and you don't need to treat all fevers, but if it's making your child uncomfortable, give an appropriate dose. there used to be two concentrations. the infant concentrated drops and the children's liquid. and that was often confusing for parents. they changed it to one concentration. the children's concentration, but it will be dosed for infants with a syringe and for children with a measuring cup . and make sure you always use the measuring device that comes with the medication you're giving.

>> what about ibprofen. some parents like it because it lasts a little longer than other fever-reducing medications. i like to use it at night because who wouldn't like an extra hour or two of sleep where your children are comfortable?

>> right. and antihistamines?

>> it can help to dry up a runny nose or a cough if the cough is due to the runny nose . but be careful since a lot of antihistamines can cause sedation, especially in children. and once in a while , you'll get a child that gets hyper on it.

>> my son is one of those. you see on some packaging d.m., what does that mean?

>> usually it's the most commonly used over-the-counter cough medicine . and you'll find it in many multi-symptom cough medicines. a study was done that shows that honey which you can only use over age 1 may actually be more effective in treating a cough.

>> and if your kid has mucus?

>> there's different medications. look for a common medication to help break up the mucus. fenal ephrine, but again, you always want to talk to your doctor.

>> thank you so much.

Would You Be In Your Gay Son's Or Best Friends Wedding? ? From ...

This past week the internet has gone en fuego and when I been en fuego I been seriously hot after a video went viral of Nathanial Gay?a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity getting married to another man. Yeah the gay marriage thing again has come up once again. People in Greek letter organizations to people all over social networking sites have chimed in on their feelings about the wedding. This isn?t going to be a post about gay marriage and relationships because I spoke about that recently in my post ?How You Worried About Gay Marriage When the Rent?s Too Damn High?. This post is going to delve into our true acceptance of gay marriage or not because at the end of the day I feel that to people getting married regardless of sex doesn?t have much to do with my life.? What I began to think about is how would I feel if my son or one of my closest friends wanted me to be in their same-sex wedding? It is easy for us to say we are for or against same-sex marriage until it is put into our own home.

After watching the video I am not going to front the video was uncomfortable for me to watch at first. I then began to realize how laid out these brothas nuptials were. Most of the women I knew were either upset their wedding wasn?t as beautiful as that or wanted their wedding to be like that. I mean let?s keep it regardless of your views of gay men they always have things laid out. But, the thing that really hit home to me was what one of the people on my Facebook page asked me. He asked me ?How would I feel if my future son wanted you to walk him down the aisle with him and give him away to marry man?? Would I do it or just attend the ceremony??

It was a very ill question I had never really been confronted with before.? I am definitely alright if two people of the same-sex want to get married because it?s their choice but how would I feel if it was in my midst is the question. I honestly really don?t know how I feel about the situation. I would hope that I would be able to stand by my son or friend and be supportive but I am going to be honest and say I would not be uncomfortable with the situation. ?I know as far as I know I don?t have any close friends or family members who are gay and for as many weddings I have been in or to the last few years I have never even been to a gay wedding so have my ideas on gay marriage really been challenged?

I guess I would compare the feeling to how some white people felt during the Civil Rights movement. ?They were alright and okay with Black people having the same rights but may have had issues when those same black people started moving into their neighborhoods and their children and grandchildren marrying black people. ?There was an overwhelming amount of people who fought and advocated for Civil Rights but they necessarily want that blackness in their family or as their next door neighbor. I am not saying my deconstruction is that extreme but I understand it?s easy to say you are for or against something as long as you are insulated away from it.

My co-host on my podcast Straight Outta LoCash?Jovan Bibbs and I have an ongoing joke about how we wouldn?t be in a gay man?s wedding because he may want us to escort ?Maurice? down the aisle and that we would come up with some reason why?we couldn?t walk with him at the rehearsal. Jovan would say ?Uh, You really don?t need me to walk with Maurice right because I can just be an usher??

But, in all seriousness I come back to the question that was proposed to me and I continually don?t have an answer but this is something I definitely know that can happen.? Would I love my son, daughter, or friend any less of they were gay? If I truly had love for them why would I not be there for them? I may not understand it but is it my issue to be comfortable with? I mean it is two consenting adults who want to get married not a man named Dan marrying a Buffalo from Wyoming.? I am in support of gay people getting married but how much support am I willing to give to their wedding and relationship is the question. I know as a progressive man I could handle the situation but at the same time I still really don?t know how much I would be involved.

How do you feel about being involded in a gay wedding? Would you be apart of one for your close family member or friend if they asked you?

Japan's Softbank in 'advanced talks' to acquire Sprint for $12+ billion

While recent rumors suggested Sprint could be interested in snatching up Metro PCS, it may actually be the target of an acquisition. The Nikkei, Reuters and Wall Street Journal report it is in final buyout talks with Japanese carrier Softbank at a price in excess of 1 trillion yen ($12 billion US). Just over a week ago Softbank snapped up rival eAccess in a billion dollar deal that added 50 percent more base stations to its LTE network and will move it from third to second largest in the country when it is completed. It got to third place with a leveraged buyout of Vodafone's Japanese arm back in 2006, and CEO Masayoshi Son mentioned last week that he has his eye on the number one spot. We're not exactly sure how a potential purchase of the third place American carrier fits into its plans (or what this means for Sprint's future, its LTE rollout and its often woeful 3G speeds), but we're betting Softbank's CFO is just trying to keep Son away from any juicy looking eBay "Buy It Now" auctions.

Boston OK's Uber Boston's GPS Services | Rocky Mountain Tracking

Massachusetts? Division of Standards has apologized to transportation start-up company Uber Boston after stripping their right to utilize GPS device to calculate travel charges. They have reinstated their right to use the GPS devices pending the results of a national study.

?

Uber relies on a smartphone app and GPS device to calculate charges for customers, which officials balked at as there is no such service currently in the city?s transportation businesses. Boston officials said, ?only approved deices can be used in commercial transactions? and ?the use of unapproved GPS systems to assess the transportation charges must be discontinued.?

?

The ruling claims that frequent customers were up in arms when they discovered the GPS device-based transportation option was no longer operational, starting a petition to bring the service back to the Commonwealth. Officials were made aware of a study being conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology involving GPS devices and their viability as taximeters.

?

The Division of Standards claimed these GPS tracking devices were not a legitimate method to charge customers utilizing Uber Boston, and handed a cease and desist on August 1.

?

Governor Deval Patrick disagreed, and the state released this statement: ?Recently, the Division of Standards informed Uber that the device they use to calculate fare and distance need to be certified by a national standard setting organization and, until that process began, the device could not be used in Massachusetts. The Division has since learned that this device is already being evaluated for certification by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Because of this, the Division will issue an operating certificate to Uber. Therefore, Uber is currently not out of compliance with state law and free to continue operating.?

?

Uber Boston appreciates the efforts of the governor to support their business. In a statement to BostInno, a representative for the company says, ?Today was a big win for Boston?s tech community and for all of its citizens that deserve the Uber transportation alternative.?

?

If it weren?t for the petition started by the people showing their need for this innovative service, things may not have worked out so well. A tweet from Brendan Ryan, who deals with communications for Governor Patrick, stated ?With all @massgovernor has done for the innovation economy, we?re not shutting down [Uber Boston]. Working on a swift resolution.? Ryan went on to say he utilizes Uber Boston?s services himself, and that it is quite popular in the Governor?s office. Mayor Tom Menino also supports the services.

Daily Share - Relationships Are Assignments! - The Daily Love

For the past 4 months, I have been trying to let go of past relationships. I have been trying to remember the idea that relationships are assignments and when those assignments are done, we have to be willing and able to let them go so that we are able to receive our next assignment. When I learned this, I felt peace, but there are times when this feels much easier said than done. To let go of a friendship I have had for the past 7 or 8 years is difficult ? to see that a group of three has gone to a group of two with me being the odd one out hurts. It hurts deeply. Sometimes I smile though, remembering the good times we shared, the lessons I?ve learned from them, and the attention and care that we showed each other when we were going through hard times. And at other times, I feel let down and I feel that at the time I needed them most, at my rock bottom before I started this journey of love, they abandoned me and wrote me off.

That pain might have led me to this journey of love, of course, so I cannot dismiss it. It?s enabled me to start this journey, really recognize my ego, and return to a place of love and peace. I can thank them for being part of my path, forgive them, forgive myself for the ways I might have hurt the relationship, forgive my ego, and release the relationship to the Universe. All I can think to do is to continue this process ? forgiving and releasing. My question is this: does it get easier? Will it get easier when I see the "best friend" tweets and facebook posts showing up on my timeline between them, even when I quickly try to pass by them? Will it get easier when I see plans of trips being made for two when it used to be the three of us planning those things? Will it get easier when I see something that reminds me of them and I want to share it, but then I think about if they would even care? Will it get easier to accept being a casual acquaintance with contact here and there rather than the daily talks?

Does it get easier to release these assignments? When I was in school, when I finished an assignment, I immediately turned it into the teacher without a problem. I wouldn't hold onto something that was already completed, nor can I now hold onto completed assignments that the Uni-verse has given me. How do I completely let go?

Candidates Mum on Climate Change

A nation inured to wanton murder was nevertheless shocked by this one: In November 2010, a group of four young men milling about as a party ended attacked another teen, randomly picking him as the victim of their vicious assault. Bobby Tillman, 18, did nothing to provoke his assailants to knock him to the ground and kick and stomp him to death. The crime occurred outside a suburban Atlanta home after parents called a halt to a teen party that had gotten out of control. This was no beating by members of a rival gang, no attack set off by longstanding grudges or old misunderstandings. ...
