Paul W. Smith: Parade Company can be your valentine

"Outta' My Mind on a Saturday Moanin'"

Happy Valentine's weekend! Who knew? Well, I guess my friend Tony Michaels did, or rather, does.

Today from 10 a.m. till 7 p.m., you and your loved one(s) can enjoy "Valentine's Day in Paradeland" at The Parade Company Studio, 9500 Mount Elliott, Studio A, Detroit, MI 48211.

Your private guided tour includes an up-close view of the larger-than-life characters and floats, including a 12-foot-tall Cupid. You'll get a commemorative photo, a special gift bag with a bottle of champagne or sparkling juice, flowers, chocolates, beads and their signature clown nose.

Nothing says "love" like a big red clown nose! Plus, it will look like you worked for days and pulled some strings to make it happen, rather than like you forgot all about Valentine's Day until right now.

All of this for just $100 per couple.

But wait, there's more!

$50 of that is tax-deductible.

Ain't love grand?

Big news this week when Pope Benedict XVI shocked the world by announcing he would become the first "former" living pope in 600 or 700 years.

The (irreverent) jokes followed minutes after it was learned he didn't have some sort of horrible illness: "Too pooped to Pope." "Gave it up for Lent." "Pope resigning? Oh no, hope it isn't steroids!" "Pope has some shoulder issues from his early football quarterback days. Throwing all those Hail Marys."

On a completely unrelated note, Lady Gaga says she's been hiding a "show injury" and playing through the pain for some time now. No more. The synovitis, apparently a severe inflammation of the joints and some other problems, moves her to the "disabled list" for now and for a while. That translates to no concert at The Palace tonight, or anywhere else soon.

Make plans to see Keith Famie's new important film, "The Embrace of Aging: The Male Perspective of Growing Old."

Its premiere is at 5 p.m. Feb. 24 at Shriners Silver Garden in Southfield. Tickets are $75 with a healthy dinner, Channel 4's Chuck Gaidica as emcee, Stewart Francke singing, Bill Mihalic making you laugh and a film to make you think and maybe save your life.

Paul W. Smith is host of ?The Paul W. Smith Show? on WJR-AM (760) from 5:30-9 a.m. Monday-Friday.
