Illinois adds 4,800 jobs, unemployment rate sits at 8.8 percent

CHICAGO, Ill -- Illinois added 4,800 jobs in October and the unemployment rate stayed at 8.8 percent for the second consecutive month, according to a Friday press release from the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).

"Job growth and an unemployment rate significantly lower than one year ago shows steady economic progress," said IDES Director Jay Rowell.

The IDES said that October 2012 job gains were driven by the Leisure and Hospitality, and Education and Health Services sectors. Manufacturing added an additional 900 jobs in October.

The amount of total unemployed persons also fell by 1,100 to a total of 581,300.

The IDES also said that Illinois has added over 158,000 private sector jobs since January of 2010. The leading growth area over that time frame is Professional and Business Services, gaining over 78,000 jobs. Government has lost the most jobs in that time frame, down over 27,000 jobs.
