Canada train disaster:Quebec police open criminal investigation

Canadian authorities have found evidence that a criminal act may have led to a train crash in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, that killed at least 50 people, provincial police Capt. Michel Forget said on Tuesday.

?

Police Inspector Michel Forget said terrorism angle is ruled out? but a? criminal investigation was opened? into the fiery wreck of a runaway oil train on Saturday that destroyed about 30 buildings in Lac-M?gantic, Quebec but investigators declined to speculate on the evidence elements that they? have recovered.

?Police Inspector Michel Forget said investigators had ?discovered elements? that led to a criminal inquiry, although he provided no details.? As how the crash and explosion? wiped out a swath of the town 130 miles east of Montreal. As of Tuesday evening, 35 people were still missing, Forget said.

Police Inspector Michel confirmed that?? the accident was not caused by? terrorism .

Train hauling 72 cars of crude oil barreled into town early on Saturday, derailed on a curve and exploded into a deadly inferno? that destroyed the center of the lakeside community.

Meanwhile, the crude oil, which was headed for the US coast, gushed through streets like a river, and the extent of? the environmental damage was not immediately clear.

Investigators? are trying to figure out whether the train's brakes were disabled before it barreled at a dangerous speed into the Quebec town, derailed and burst into a deadly inferno.

The growing number of trains transporting crude oil in Canada and the United States had raised concerns of a major disaster, and this derailment was sure to add to the debate over a proposed oil pipeline running across the US that Canada says it badly needs.
