Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine at Cypress has implemented a patient portal system that allows patients to enter their information securely online.?

Medical providers are becoming less dependent on paper charts and patient-registration sheets.

It?s costly, but more providers are moving toward electronic systems that can be used to streamline check-in and other processes.

Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine at Cypress is one example of a Wichita health care provider that has implemented a patient portal system that allows patients to enter their information securely online.

The system recently went live. Through it, patients create an online account that can be used for requesting an appointment, a medication refill or communication with a physician, as well as making a payment. The account takes and a patient?s medical history.

Patients or potential patients can access the Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine portal through its website.

Jennifer Ale-Ebrahim, the clinic?s administrator, says Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine has been looking at implementing a patient portal system for about five years as a way to better connect patients with the clinic?s physicians and staff.

Using the system costs the clinic about $400 a month. That?s based on a $50-a-month charge per physician.

Ale-Ebrahim says the clinic is working with other medical providers in the community on ways to share patient information electronically.

It?s all part of a collective push in health care toward more information sharing among providers as a way to improve communication, eliminate duplicated tests and procedures, and lower health care costs overall.
