Social Roleplaying Games

I'd try Adventure Quest. It's got the community and in-depth strategy of an MMO without the part where you meet other players in-game. So I guess you could call it a massively single-player online RPG. Sadly, they don't have a native chat client...you'll have to use Internet Relay Chat for that.

Plus, you can play it for as long or as short as you like--"coffee break sized fun", to borrow one of their phrasings. Whether it's a couple of random scaled encounters or one of their several epic quest lines, they've had 10 years to offer something for everyone...including the pay-to-win folks.

How long will he keep on fighting? How long will his pain last? Maybe only the X-Buster on his hand knows for sure...

Practical Programs In Free Sms To Cuba

Courtesy of Jayson K. C. Gutierrez ? When, you relied on letters, telephones as well as fax machines but now you like speedier as well as occasionally less intrusive types of communication like email or perhaps instant messenger. Actually more popular, unfortunately, along with a phenomenon of correspondence experienced around the world, is sending SMS text messages to each other thru cellphones (sometimes known because cell phones or cellular phones).

Abruptly Message Provider (SMS) is the general name for the technologies which enables individuals to forward as well as acquire text signals by way of cellphones (or perhaps mobile phones).

The GSM digital cellular telephone standard (popular in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and additionally some parts of North America) state that: ?Communications can be around 160 characters of text in length?. CDMA systems allow greater message size as well as work in North & South America, Asia (China, India, Japan, South Korea, Brand new Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, etc).

(In actual reality, most modern cellphones using the GSM standard send signals bigger than 160 characters, however they do so by forwarding multiple signals of 160 characters. Which signifies that when you forward a message of 330 characters in size, you have got in fact sent 2 communications of 160 characters and one message of 10 characters.)

SMS messages can include of phrase, numbers or some sort of alphanumeric combination; binary formatting is actually supported.

Theoretically communicating, SMS is a shop as well as ahead provider. This would mean that signals tend to be not sent directly from sender to recipient, but constantly via some kind of SMS center rather. You have a limited time to download or receive your own signals (this occurs automatically as soon as you alter the cellphone on), otherwise the messages tend to be removed from the SMS center concerned.

Sending SMS is a great, quick option to communicate alongside buddies and family. Different from forwarding email, though, forwarding SMS messages is usually not free. Inside the United Kingdom, for example, signals often cost ?0.10 per message. And with individuals giving tens or perhaps hundreds of signals each day, expenses can mount up.

So phone companies design pay back plans which enable you to forward a certain wide range of text signals free per month. Or, should you decide pay sufficient of the monthly fee (or top-up your own pay-as-you-go phone often enough) you may even generally be authorized to dispatch a particular limitless wide range of sms communications at no cost.

Yes, there are really many, numerous websites that make it easier to forward free SMS text messages using the internet. Simply type in your own message at just these a web site, then your cellphone quantity you wish to forward a text message to, and also click on the forward button. Occasionally the signals are really delivered immediately, or perhaps in the area of a hour or perhaps so. Additionally, truly often there is not a have to register to use the sms to cuba service.

Court revives suit involving Elvis memorabilia

(Reuters) - The heirs of a longtime friend of Elvis Presley can proceed with a lawsuit over a chunk of the King's hair and other memorabilia they say were stolen and sold at auction, an appeals court ruled on Tuesday.

At stake is $218,000 in proceeds from the sale of a trove of collectors' items that allegedly belonged to Elvis's personal friend and fan club president, Sterling Gary Pepper.

Pepper's heirs, John Tate and Norma Deeble, filed the suit in 2009 on behalf of their late cousin. They accused Pepper's former caretaker, Nancy Pease Whitehead, of stealing the collection when Pepper was transferred into a home for the disabled.

An Iowa district court refused to block the auction, which ultimately reaped $28,000 for an Elvis-worn red suede shirt, $15,000 for a clump of hair cut off when he went into the Army, and $1,400 for two dried white roses from his funeral. The lower court found that Pepper's relatives had waited too long to file the lawsuit and ruled for Whitehead before a trial.

Deeble appealed to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of Pepper's estate, arguing that the family members had no knowledge that the collection existed and were not able to file the suit earlier.

That argument was enough to convince a three-judge panel of the 8th Circuit to revive the suit, which on Tuesday sent the case back to the lower court for a trial.

The $218,000 in sale proceeds is in escrow while the case is still pending, said Matthew Sease, a lawyer for Pepper's estate. Also in escrow are a pastel painting of Elvis and his wife Priscilla Presley.

Brant Leonard, a lawyer for Whitehead, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The case is Estate of Nell G. Pepper et al v. Nancy Whitehead et al, 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 11-2764.

Wikipad Gaming Tablet Specs Released, Launching In 2012

Wikipad, the appropriately named company behind the upcoming Wikipad gaming tablet, has released the official hardware specs for its soon-to-be-released device (via VentureBeat). The Android 4.1 tablet will come packing one of those fancy, new Tegra 3 1.4GHz quad-core processors and 1GB of DDR2 RAM, which puts it ahead of the recently released Nexus 7 and behind the upcoming Ouya console in terms of raw power.

What's especially cool about the Wikipad from a gaming perspective is that it ships with a gamepad mount fitted with twin analog sticks, two triggers/bumpers, four face buttons, and Start/Select. There might not be many mobile titles that would take advantage of such a full-featured controller setup, but once you factor in something like OnLive streaming, the mount starts to make more sense. The peripheral is also designed to work with the tablet's speakers and power port.

There's more to the specs, but it's nothing you haven't seen before in a modern-day tablet. The 10.1-inch IPS display sports a 16:10 aspect ratio with a max resolution of 1,280x800. It weighs in at just over one pound and it's roughly one-third of an inch thick. Two cameras are also included: a front-facing 2MP camera and a rear-facing 8MP camera.

Now for the bad news: while the Wikipad was shown at CES with a built-in 3D display, that functionality will not be a feature of the launch models. It's possible that future versions will add it in, but nothing's concrete yet. As long as you're okay with that, you can start shopping for a Wikipad when it releases sometime before the end of 2012.

House heading toward election-year tax showdown

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An election-year tax faceoff between Democrats and Republicans in the GOP-controlled House is heading toward a predictable outcome Wednesday.

Republicans are poised to pass a bill to renew a full slate of Bush-era tax cuts for every working American. Democrats are countering with a doomed plan that would extend the tax cuts for all but the highest-earning Americans.

The dueling votes are more about political messaging three months before Election Day than a genuine attempt to resolve longstanding differences over taxes on higher-bracket earners.

The impasse threatens a fiscal stalemate that could result in higher payroll deductions for every worker.

The Bush-era tax cuts ? renewed in their entirety with the support of Obama and many Democrats two years ago ? expire again Dec. 31. Then, Obama said he did not want to raise taxes in a weak economy, though his signature on the tax cuts came as he also won a cut in the payroll tax and an extension of unemployment benefits.

Now, the White House promises Obama would veto the measure were it to reach his desk. Obama instead supports a plan that passed the Democratic-controlled Senate last week by a near party-line 51-48 vote.

Many economists believe allowing all tax rates to snap back to Clinton-era levels could drive the economy back into a recession, especially if automatic spending cuts designed as punishment for Washington's failure to enact another deficit-cutting bargain strike at the same time.

Republicans say Obama's insistence on raising taxes on wealthier earners will sting small-business owners who create jobs. Democrats counter that the taxes only apply to the earnings of individuals exceeding $200,000 yearly and couples surpassing $250,000 ? exempting 98 percent of taxpayers and all but the top 3.5 percent of taxpayers with business income.

"This should be an easy vote for an overwhelming majority of members to say, 'Let's extend these tax cuts we agree on and then debate what we don't agree on,'" said No. 2 House Democrat Steny Hoyer of Maryland. "It should be easy."

"Two years ago the Democrats controlled everything in Washington. The same question stood before Congress," said GOP Whip Kevin McCarthy of California on Wednesday. At that time 139 Democrats voted to ... stop a tax increase."

The common wisdom in Washington is that the outcome will be determined by whether President Barack Obama wins another term or Republican Mitt Romney boots Obama out of the White House.

Obama has made tax fairness ? which includes tax increases on the rich ? a big theme of his re-election campaign.

Likewise, Republicans have made resolute opposition to tax increases ? especially as the economy is weak ? a major element of their election-year platform.

The White House said that if the tax cuts were not continued, middle-class families would face average tax increases next year of $1,600. It also said the GOP bill would grant tax reductions averaging $160,000 to households where income exceeds $1 million annually.

The Democratic version also would boost the top tax rate paid by people who inherit estates to 55 percent, exempting the first $1 million in an estate's value. The GOP measure would maintain today's 35 percent top rate and would not tax the first $5.12 million of an estate's value.

The GOP bill ignores some tax credits for low- and middle-income families that Democrats want to extend for college costs; for some low-income couples and large working families; and for families with children.

All were part of Obama's 2009 economic stimulus bill. Democrats say those tax breaks were meant to be permanent, but Republicans say they were only a short-term response to the recession.

Apple Continues To Support Traditional Mac Management In Mountain Lion Server

Apple Continues To Support Traditional Mac Management In Mountain Lion Server

Workgroup Manager and Managed Preferences are alive and kicking in Mountain Lion Server.

In addition to launching Mountain Lion Server last week, Apple rather quietly released a Mountain Lion Server version of Workgroup Manager ? the traditional Mac management tool included in previous releases of OS X Server. The move was unexpected after Apple released the Advanced Administration guide for Mountain Lion Server, which implied that administrators would need to begin an almost-immediate shift to Mountain Lion Server?s Profile Manager.

The move is good news for many organizations that have an existing investment in OS X Server and Mac clients. Although Mountain Lion Server?s Profile Manager is arguably a more modern and enterprise-friendly solution, it only supports Macs running Lion and Mountain Lion. Any schools or businesses with clients still on Leopard or Snow Leopard would be out of luck if Profile Manager were the only available option.

While the move is good news, there is very real probability that the Mountain Lion release of Workgroup manager is meant to offer a stop-gap measure for organizations that still rely heavily on Managed Preferences. Given that Workgroup Manager isn?t mentioned in Apple?s advanced admin documentation and the emphasis that the company is placing on Profile Manager and configuration profiles, it seems likely that Apple won?t provide Workgroup Manager and related features in whatever OS X Server release follows Mountain Lion Server.

Apple?s move to an annual release cycle for OS X (and presumably OS X Server) means that Workgroup Manager and Managed Preferences could be gone for good within a year. Following the cancellation of the Xserve and what could be called the consumerization of OS X Server since the release of Snow Leopard Server three years ago, many organizations dependent on OS X Server, Open Directory, Managed Preferences, and other enterprise-focused technologies have wisely begun to consider their options moving forward.

Lion Server could be seen as a nudge to prompt organizations to seriously consider if a release of OS X Server more oriented to small businesses or workgroups would meet their needs and to evaluate and implement alternative enterprise solutions if it isn?t.

Mountain Lion Server, with its more polished and production-ready capabilities certainly poses that same question and it should motivate Mac IT professionals working with OS X Server to really look at the release and the management capabilities of Profile Manager as well as third-party alternatives. That investigation will likely lead to developing a strategic plan for Mac management and/or support that extends further than the next six to twelve months (at least).

It?s worth noting, however, that Mountain Lion?s focus on configuration profiles has led mobile management vendors to add Mac management as an option right next to iOS, Android, and other mobile platform management tools. Mobile management vendor?AirWatch, for example, already supports Mac management and rival MobileIron?plans ?to integrate Mac management into a seamless administration console and workflows. That gives Mac IT pros more choices than ever before as they consider what solutions will be best for their organizations going forward.

Miramax arrives on Lovefilm to let you relive the golden age of Weinsteins

Miramax has reached a deal with Lovefilm to get its back-catalog of award-winning films available on-demand in the UK and Germany. It's an unsurprising move given the company has similar deals in place with Netflix and Hulu to let you watch classics like Pulp Fiction, Clerks and Trainspotting whenever the urge takes you. While there was no official confirmation of a launch window, a cursory check of our own account reveals that some of the titles (including Kill Bill) are already popping up on the instant service.
